Don't think it would help much. I had a 3406 B without air to air and it did pretty good with fuel. That being said, I think it's motor design and not the fact there is an air to air. A models always done poor no matter how slow or heavy/light you pull.

Subscribed simply because I want to do this to my A block kitty as well. What model of truck? If W900A I've done a bit of research into it.
From what I've found out so far, and this is all hearsay mind you, definitely not set in stone. I was told a rad/air to air assembly from a late 90's FLD will fit into a W900A with some modifications. I have not looked into this yet so it may just be complete BS.
After doing some measurements on my regular hood W900A, I think it is possible to squeeze an air to air in front of the rad if the shutters are deleted.
I have also been told that the upper rad tank from a W900B will fit on a W900A rad (W900B tank is apparently notched out for the inlet and outlet of the air to air). Again this is one is hearsay.
I did find a few threads on here about 3406A performance and IIRC one guy was claiming 6 mpg or so with a different turbo. -
Yes it is a w900A extd hood my mech said he has done using rad cac from 86-87 359 said it works fine was also told by a friend rad supply had the conversion parts also he said new rad cac and AC cond package was around 3000 just wondering if it made enough diff to be worth the cost

With an extended hood you've probably got tons of room up there. I've got to be pretty creative with my limited space.
-
Don't even need to change radiators, have to just modify the top tank to allow the clearance for the ATA.
-
Radiators are much different between the 900A and B, some say to use the whole unit from a 900B, but nothing is a direct fit, has something to do with removing the spacers under the radiator in the A model.
-
I personally think you are grasping at straws, there isn't enough engine there to need the ATA swap, maybe if it were a B model, but even then you would not truly notice the difference.
-
I doubt the 3406A will get decent fuel mileage as the were designed to run between 1700-2100 rpm and the 3406B. 1200-1700 rpm.
-
I agree I don't think you will see alot of improvement going air to air. The only advantage I can think of is eliminating the jacket cooler. Last one I priced at the local CAT dealer for a B was 1700 just for the cooler. I don't have an aftermarket source to compare prices to.
