Been going by that location the last 2 days and the weather has been terrible. Cold and lots of snow showers. Didn't see the DOT man though. Bunch of $$ hungry panzies. If it was truly about safety, they wouldn't allow the cold to stop them!
As far as I'm concerned, it has never been about safety.

North Carolina does that as well. I would be madder than a hornet if one of them woke me up from,my sleep to inspect me.

Az has installed cameras signs and sensors in a lot of the rest areas

I have stories from company drivers that tell of free level 1 Inspections they got. Unfortunately for them when I start prodding for details I always find out that they were doing stuff like parking on Off-ramps or had major violations that were visible from a cruiser that was patrolling a rest area.

This makes sense too, from a DOT officer's standpoint if their job is in fact to protect the public from problems with CMVs. If the DOT can spot a problem from a distance, its probably bad enough to warrant a ticket. I've never had the DOT bust my ###, not have I ever heard of them doing so, to me or anyone else that had some minor illegal aspect of the truck. A major issue is spotted first, then they start adding up the small ones to hurt drivers that are breaking the big and important rules.

As a side note, if you can't plan your trip well enough to not be on a ramp for the night, you sorta deserve to be punished. The one time I got a knock on my window for parking on a ramp, I explained to the cop that I was kicked out of a secure facility while I was out of hours, and that the facility was less than a mile away. I volunteered my BOL for the load that showed the address and grabbed the qualcomm and showed my loaded call and day graph and explained my case as being a choice of violation or illegal parking. That cop...escorted me 5 miles to a wal-mart that was too new for my GPS, and told me that he didn't want me to get hit.

From my experience, if you are honest with DOT officers and aren't activating their spidy senses that something is wrong by being overly defensive or angry, then they aren't going to bother you because they don't see you as part of the problem they are fighting. The DOT has a bunch of rights to inspect you pretty much whenever and wherever, but they won't waste their time unless they see a reason to. SO DON'T GIVE THEM A REASON TO HURT YOU!

    misterG and spyder7723 Thank this.
