I love Watkins-Shepard. They never once did anything except for a load I had where I unloaded all but 1 sheet of aluminum and I had told them I could load a whole load in Rockford Il and take the aluminum to Indiana and unload it. They said "Oh, You have room for a load? Oh well, we were'nt planning on you being empty in Rockkford." I called the talking head and told him they were costing the company money doin that. Never happened again. I hauled a load of moulding from Ca to MD and complained it didnt pay enough and they added on the freight so I'd take it. Made money there, had good runs, ran my fanny off, 360000 mi in 3 yrs and got discounts on parts tires and fuel.

Seeing this post was yet another in the "bad outfit" section, I clicked it to get the latest word on W&S.
Glad to read these guys can still be called "good". -
Please clarify for me if you would, I've only had one cup of coffee so far this morn. Are you saying that you do work for W/S? Because your first line stated you'd never work for someone like that, and maybe thats what threw me off.

Are you saying that you do work for W/S ? I'm just a bit confused by your first line stating that you'd never work for an outfit like that. Plus I've only had one cup of coffee this morn so my mind is only half awake, and I'm new to this forum and still trying to figure it out.

I think he was saying that he would never work for a company that did that to HIM, but W&S didn't do that to him, they supposedly did it to ArKie. I believe Artie has made some similar complaints about every company he has been interested in though, check out his other posts from earlier in the year.

Every company has turnover, and W&S is certainly no exception. I can't give figures, because I don't know them, but I would wager that W&S's turnover rate is much less than most companies in this business. Another reason for continuing to bring on new drivers is that we're expanding. New terminal opening in KY, the addition of a big furniture account out of NC and most of the east Lowe's carpet deliveries result, I'm sure, in the need for more drivers.
BTW, W&S has one 30 day school in Missoula. That's the only one. They do 3 and 10 day orientations in New Jersey also, and they might do those orientations in other places as well, but I don't know. So those 20 students are the only green students for the month. That doesn't seem like much to me.

I'd be willing to bet a years pay on it (low turnover rate) and I have met some really pissed off drivers here. They're far and few between though.
I don't know what it is either. But, I do know I've only seen 3 or 4 new faces at our terminal in the past year. And I occasionally meet 1, maybe 2 at other terminals.
Compared to my last job...where I met 10-20 at every terminal.
I think what really spooks most people about W&S, is the pay scale. Which is very misleading to us older experienced drivers.
We see cents per mile. Well, that's all they really show you...up front. But when you get into the actual pay. It's much more than just cents per mile.
Drivers don't realize that. So they don't apply. When I applied, I fully expected to be making no more than $450-600 a week bring home. I was ready for a change, and willing to give up some money for that change. Then, I got to see what we really get paid for doing...other than driving. And have been pleased since.
I'll be here for awhile yet, I have no plans of going anywhere. But as always, this is trucking and those plans could change this afternoon.
Truthfully, I hope this is my last trucking job. So far so good. Now if it can stay together for another 18 years

Wanna know how dum Amerikans are go to Youtube and watch How dumb are Americans. Anyhow, as I said the first time WS was my home til I got hurt, ruptered disc from a 40 yr old injury, and I never heard one bad word about them, I did not have anything against them. They sent a co driver to rescue me in Omaha. They were the finest people in the world. We hired a driver and he screwed up every day and they tried to help me retrain him but he was sharp as a bowling ball. He made around 50,000/ yr driving a Pete w/all the bells and whistles and a big motor and we finally sold his ride. If I were to buy a new one today they would beg me to put it back on and I would'nt hesitate. Call them and ask about Karl.
If you are going to work for a man then By GOD work for him. Give him 110% and treat him like he is your family. You depend on each other.
