Hoping to find some Prime tanker drivers here. Trying to get some questions answered before I make my decision to switch to tanker. I have been driving reefer with prime for the last 7 months and been looking to get home a bit more. Prime said that they have a regional tanker position that could get me home every weekend but there's a catch. It's lease only, no company drivers. This scares me because I don't want to get stuck in the hole. Are there any lease/regional drivers out there that go home at least every other weekend? Do you make decent money?

Lease only?? My guess is if they don't want their company drivers running it then the money must be really ####ty. I would ask around about that being lease only if it is information from you FM he may just be trying to keep you on his board, I would talk to whoever is the head man in the tanker division,

It's not from my fm. Comes straight from Brett, the guy who runs the tanker division. The reason there aren't many company tanker guys is because only otr tanker has company drivers. All dedicated routes are lease only so if I want to take a route that will get me home more often then I have to sign a lease. He claims that the drivers on the route average 1200 a week after fixed costs.
I just started driving truck when I started with prime and tanker was my original plan but they talked me into doing reefer first. The reason I want to do tanker is because there are a lot of local positions in my area, Ohio, that are tanker and eventually I want a local job. I wish I could talk to prime tanker drivers but I haven't seen any at any of the truck stops. I personally hate the idea of lease. Out of my group of 15 friends from training I am the only one who went company and I swear I think they all have short term memory loss. I still talk to most of them regularly and they think they are making huge bank because they got a 2200 pay check this week. What they seem to completely forget is the fact that I talked to them the week before when they were in the hole or brought home 94$. Yet because this week's check was 2200, they are making bank. I literally spoke with my trainer yesterday, who has been lease training for the last 3 years, and made him tell me all his settlements so far this year. Then I divided it by the weeks this year and gave him his true average and he was shocked. He only averaged 1200 a week gross. I average 1150 solo company and I don't have to be scared of something breaking.

OK here's my main dilemma, I never wanted to be otr for long, prime was simply my starter company. Now that I have been driving for 8 months I posted my resume online looking for more home time with decent pay. This week I got an offer from jb hunt and heartland. Both are home every weekend, heartland is salary 1000 per week and jb is 42cpm intermodal, only 2cpm less than what I get now. Heartland scares me because it is salary and I've read the reviews that state that you will be constantly flip flopping from days to nights. Jb scares me because it's less cpm and miles so I'm afraid that I will be making squat. Plus if I take either I will owe prime.
I don't want to take a job that I will want to quit shortly, doesn't look good on the resume, but at the same time I don't want to keep going home for a couple of days every 5-6 weeks and I already know that every recruiter lies. A few weeks ago I accepted a job at nick strimbu trucking, home every other night and off every weekend. Didn't quit prime, instead I set up my home time so I could do the 3 days of training. While I was there I talked to some of the drivers who laughed when I told them about what I was told by the recruiter. Said it was all bs, sure you could go home every weekend but you would be lucky to make 600$ a week doing so. The recruiter quoted me an average of 2800 miles per week at 49cpm saying that there loads were about 600 miles out and then I'd come 600 miles back every day. None of it turned out to be true. Thank goodness I didn't quit prime

Sweet, all I have to do is move to California where the cost of living is double compared to Ohio

Prime scares me too. Half of them run 55 in a 70 mph zone. They are a road hazard but that's okay they get a fuel bonus if they go slow enough.
