I'd have threw a tire chain on the ground so he could get moving.

After watching him struggle for like 20 min, I came out, went to him and asked if he had chains.
"Change? No, I got no change!" and went back to look at his wheels.
I immediately felt like a bum asking for change on the streets. It was embarassing. Then I wondered what went thru his mind, probably something like "man, that driver sees me struggling over here and has a nerve to come over and ask me for change, wtf!"
I approached him again:"Chains, I mean chains, not Change, you know...snow chains, the chains you put on the wheels when it's snowing??"
The look on his face was expressing something like:" Wtf is wrong with this Trucker now asking me for snow chains in VA in the middle of the night when I am stuck in the mud?".
At this point I gave up and went inside the gas station building. Another 20 min later when I got out he was already parked next to me. I guess the rocking back and forth finally got him out. -
They put people in trucks like him. Scary. As a X logger & Pipeliner chains in mud is no big deal. Heck I've chained in 2 feet of powder dirt. It canbe just as slick as mud.

Of course, put cribbing down or whatever you need to do to keep it from sinking, if you are loaded.Hammer166 Thanks this. -
Had that happen on snow at a dirt lot in Mt. a few years back, skateboard parked behind me was kind enough to gently back into my trailer and give me a nudge to get me moving.

always worked, if it didn't, ask for a tug, if couldn't get one, I'd have to evaluate, either shovel + some kitty litter and if that wasn't feasible, wrecker would be last resort. these days I usually put put around the yard in a goat, and not drive a tractor into mudholes, so it's not an issue.LindaPV Thanks this. -
Oil dry salt any of those should give you enough traction to get out.
