Wasn't looking for accolades just stating facts sir. I know at least 10 people that came straight out of school and did not go over the road. My company is looking for 40 drivers now and will train. They are hiring across all three divisions. So that could be 40 out of of your ten thousand. People always say what can't be done because they didn't have the n+ts to try it or do it. A lot of decisions people make are because they are uninformed, I started this thread to let people know that it is possible to start a driving career without going over the road. Unlike me a lot of people have marriages and children. I wanted to inform those who do,not to shy away from driving because they think that they will be away from their family.
Why does everyone think you have to go otr?

I'll say it again: OTR is a good fallback position to have...and it's hella hard to get an OTR driving position (without having to go through some kind of training) unless you have some type of recent OTR experience. I've known people that have had nothing but oilfield experience. They made great money when it was booming. Now it's bust and they can't find a job. They can't get hired at an OTR company because they don't have the required experience. So they are forced to fight for the precious few local gigs that are available. I don't have that issue. I know that no matter what, I can and will always have a job pulling a reefer OTR. That means that I'm out here making money while the guy that has nothing but local experience is sitting at home fighting 1000 other drivers for that last Home Depot home delivery position.

People think you have to go over the road for the same reason that they think you have to work for a mega company .
It boils down to the fact that most are to danged lazy to get off their butt and put in the leg work.
They just want to sit at home fill out online apps and have someone call them .
It is to hard to get up in the morning put on a nice set of clothes and go out and start knocking on doors.
It hurts to be told "you don't have what we need"
Everyone wants it the easy way . -
Never intended for this thread to ruffle feathers. This was for people who think about going to cdl school but have doubts because they think they have to go otr and be away from their family or young children.

Oh wait, someone just responded f your pillow.
Your right, not one...Scott101 Thanks this. -
local driving work does exist, how many are year round, what is the starting pay?when training is needed. how many otr jobs exist, what is the starting pay if training is needed ?
many companies tell you up front two years of otr experience open doors that have been previously closed with out it.
I lost count of how many flat bed drivers are reluctant to train another that can't preform maneuvers such as backing. most tend to prefer experience.
I see the ads too, inquire if you wish everybody's got to start somewhere. -
You don't have to spend a day OTR, only reason I have is because the runs were too long, and was back at the house the next day. Been at my employer for 10 years, after 5 they paid for my Class A license. Which was actually beneficoal I think because I learned everything on the job.
