owning your own truck

    hey i gotta a question for some of u exp owner ops i have the chance to own my own truck threw my friends dad he is getting out of the industry and i can get his truck out right with no payments to be made any advice on company's to go with and how do u figure out the road taxes?? i have been a lease op for over a year and i know how to make a biz work due to me have a crappy lease to own truck and company any help would be appreciated

    What do you want to pull? And where do you want to run? Do you need to run under their authority, or are you going to get all the plates, permits etc., and take care of all the nec. filings? Will you be doing all the paperwork or do you have help?

    i have pulled flat bed and ref so i can do all of it i like flatbed i can run all 48 im not married or any kids,, i would like for them to take care of the permits and stuff.. and i can do all my own paper work my co pilot trucker helps me with my road and fuel tax ... i have 3 years of otr year and a half flat bed year and a half refer i have a clean mvr i haven't had a ticket or incedent since 2003 which was only a ticket for a tail light out never been arrested or anything so that isn't a problem for the company i am 26 27 years old in nov in good shape does that help any?

    You have more experience than I, but here goes. It sounds like you are in a good positon, no truck pymnt. etc.. This site is great for looking into companies. Landstar is always one that comes to the top of the list. I cant say ive heard anything bad about them. You should be able to have the company take care of the road taxes etc., I believe this is very common. I guess the bottom line is that you should do the research, so the you can figure out what is best for you. A few flatbed co. would be: Maverick, Roehl, Warren(lots of OD), and ATS(who I work for), Decker, Melton,Sammons. For reefer, I have heard good things about Martin, but I have no real experience for you there. Celedon sounds like they have a good program, but I dont know if they have reefer or not. Hope this helps at least a little.

    I think leasing onto a small regional carrier would work for you.Money is usually better on short haul.Be sure to ask questions about everything.Have an attorney check over your lease.Don`t forget to ask about fuel surcharges.Good luck,its not really a good time to buy a truck now,but when is.Watch your pennies-your dollars will take care of themselves.

    yea i have been looking into landstar.. and doesn't ats do alot of heavy haul ?

    yea i would be getting a killer deal on the truck and i have about 11 grand in savings i could go local hauling containers but i don't wana do that my buddy does that and he gets shafted alot

    Yes and no. That is one of their specialties, along with wind energy. But there is plenty of general freight. As an O/O you would have your choice of what you took. But I think a smaller more regional company may be the best bet. Easier to be noticed etc. ATS is a solid company, no debt i'm told, but they also fall into that odd place, too big to be small and too small to be really big. Sometimes thats good, sometimes not. And I have to disagree about being a bad time to buy a truck, there are tons of great deals out there! But yes, you need to be careful or the only good deal will be for the guy who sold you the truck!

    well the truck is payed off and i have known him since i was 3 i am getting it for about 10 grand less then what the dealer offered him for it
