Where are you guys (and gals) leased on to?

I am not an o/o, but I drive for a fleet owner. He has 13 trucks and looking to spread his wings. He has mostly been in the expedited game, but is wanting something a little more steady. He was looking at doing some reefer and suggested maybe even Schneider since they have their own board and the ability to dispatch themselves. I am his guinea pig, basically, and am helping him with trying to find a good fit. I have lots of reefer experience, so that's a plus.

What I know so far is that:
Most reefer outfits are offering right around $1.00/mi + fsc.
A lot of guys a #####ing about Schneider's load board and changing the rules of the game without telling the IC's.
My boss already lost his butt at Landstar...so that's definitely out.
Wants about $5000 gross to the truck every week. I think that's really pushing it for a solo truck, but that's what he wants so...
The outfit he has the truck leased on to right now is giving him 88% of gross revenue.
He doesn't have his own authority, so that's out.

So with that being stated, I'm trying to find a decent outfit that doesn't run 2 logbooks, but doesn't screw the driver either (LOL right?) Any thoughts??

I know you were joking about the 2 log books but some people are delusional thinking they could get away with that stuff... If the DOT wants to figure out where you have been and when there are plenty of cameras everywhere to verify. Not worth the risk...

$5000 gross isn't all that difficult...average $2/mile for 2500 miles does it. Even at $1.75/mile, you're only looking at a little over 2850 miles/week. You're probably not going to find that with a "per mile" company, though. I've always preferred percentage pay...but even then, it depends upon whoever is booking the loads knowing what you expect to get. If they know you'll run cheap to stay "busy", they'll find cheap busy-work. If you're inclined to park it 'till something better pops up, they'll find better freight. They don't get paid if you don't run.

$1/mile isn't even worth getting out of bed.

13 trucks and he doesn't have his own authority? Anyway, find @BigBadBill here on TTR. In fact, he responded to one of your previous posts about freight out of OKC. $5000 a week is definitely doable. Short haul freight (less than 700 miles in my opinion) pays way better than most long haul in a $/mile analysis. And it keeps you closer to home.

He does have his own authority, but he prefers to just run under others authority. Sorry I didn't make it clearer.

I can see that $5000 is doable...Just need to find a company that is willing to let that happen. Looks like Bruenger Trucking out of Wichita might be an option. I try to get a hold of BigBadBill. Thanks.

    :(;)
No company is going to let it happen. It will be up to you and your boss to MAKE it happen. A guy in the lease purchase forum did a thread on Bruenger. They seem like an alright outfit. He said there is lots of meat going west and plenty of dry freight coming back. He was profitable as a lease purchase operator with them and was home weekly. You will probably do much better with bullishly optimistic BigBadBill. I think he has a much more diverse freight base. This of course is pure speculation on my part. I haven't worked for either of the two. I am basing my opinions on what I read here on TTR. That right there should be your first red flag.

Get him to talk to BBB. I know we've got at least one small fleet leased on with more than a few of our O/O's buying second and third trucks, and Farm2Fleet is breaking into reefer, so there's plenty of room for mutual growth if that's what your bossman is looking for.

Where are you based out of? If you're near North Liberty Iowa, Denver CO, Dallas Tx, check out JRRW transport. No touch LTL running from their dedicated ConAgra warehouses. 48ft dry vans and reefers, a few years ago they were running 1.15/mile, fsc, and 30$ a stop.(including the pu and 1st delivery).
