Running a volvo with a cummins and the stupid opti-idle just wondering if anyone knew of anything you can do to over ride it and make it idle without shuttin down. I know in the freightliners with opti idle if you let it do its thing the first time it shuts down you turn on all your interior lights then the truck thinks the battery is dying and wont shut down, but the fans will turn on and off all night.

My Detroit is convinced to idle forever (or out of fuel), if I turn the cruise control on and then set the cruise. It defaults to about 1000 rpm, but I bring the "speed" control down to about 700 rpm.

I've been told the same thing, its all in the cruise. Make the computer think your cruising along and your good.

I ran a Volvo with a Cummins for a while. I agree with above posters, all you should need to do is set your cruise control on.

All mechanics will tell you to idle at 1000 versus 700. It keeps the oil pressure up higher and the turbo spinning faster. Over all better on the engine idling.

I know there are several different types on the Volvos. The one I currently drive flashes on the display it is about to shut down. Pressing the clutch all the way to the floor and releasing stops the shut down and allows it to run until you cut it off. Before finding that out on occasion I used to release the tractor breaks and just use trailer brakes and chocks to avoid it cutting off. The computer just thinks you are stuck in traffic then.

    Hey Lugnut,

Your quote in your signature is right on! I will go out on my first run in 10 years later today (after the NASCAR Race). It took a lot of looking, the big companies wouldn't take me because I didn't have any OTR experience in the last 1-3 years, it was their insurance companies. So I started looking at small companies and the first two wanted to know one thing, had I let my Class A CDL expire?? Because I had maintained it since I last drove in Spet '98, they said their insurance company would accept me. Also, I have no violations, felonies, etc.. Thanks to the DMV clerk in Colorado who, when I went to renew my license and was going to drop my CDL, asked me if I was sure I wanted to let it go. She said, "it is a very valuable license, you may need it one day". She was absolutely correct!

We had one a few years ago. One guy would lower the trailer dolly on level ground and not apply the tractor or trailer parking brakes.I don,t know how safe this.

Yeah the cruise control thing doesnt work on my volvo, still shuts down after a few minutes. Really drives me nuts in the middle of the night shake on start and shake on shutdown really wakes me up quick thinking someone hit me. Hopefully I can play with it some more and find a way to over ride this piece of ####

With Opti Idle there should be safety switches on the hood, which does not allow the system to work with the hood open. Find one of the switches and disconnect or jump it and the system should not allow the engine to start and stop thinking the hood is open.
