Looking at buying a glider in the next few weeks. Trying to figure out is the $12k difference worth it for the CAT? I love the CAT, but never owned a S60. THOUGHTS??????

we ran 60 series until you couldn't get them in the KW and petes anymore. (2004?)

then we switched to cats. 6nz thru acerts.

the 60's had better economy. easier and cheaper to work on.

the cats were not problematic, save for some teething issues with the acerts. the cats are overbuilt. which is good.

both brands were good. we woulda never left the detroits tho, given the choice.

i like the 60 series better. especially if i'm the one paying for it. i like the way a 60 series pulls and runs, even tho the cats make more power, being a good deal bigger displacement.

Both good motors. cats ar more expensive in parts but last much longer on average Detroit's have better fuel mileage but cats put much more power to ground. So pick your preference

I'm planning on a Glider in the near future to. Might want to look at Thompson Cat and have them custom build one for you. I think it would be worth it,at least that's my plan.

I have driven both. They are both excellent engines. I would buy the 6nz first though. The fuel mileage difference isn't very much. They both do well. They both live for a very long time. The cat out performs though.

....and that caterpillar turbo whistle ...nothing like it

How much extra for an N14 out of curiosity. Hard to go wrong with either one of those two but I'm a Cummins fan.

The Cat will have better resale at some point I'm assuming also, if that is a factor.

Do you do all of your own engine work or do you have a relationship with someone who does that for you? What do they work on? Either or? Or just one or the other? If you don't do all the work on it yourself that is an important consideration.

if that was your only choice then DD60.

Don't bother with cat unless you have deep pockets.

I choose to go with Cummins because of my experience with them, ended up with Macks so I had their engines in them until I ordered new trucks which have Cummins in them. I was offered a break in the prices on "on lot" trucks with cat engines in them but when we did the numbers (my accountant and me), the cummins were cheaper so I ordered. Just basic repairs came out 20% more on the cats. I like cats, drove a bunch of trucks with them but when they had problems, they were a PIA to get fixed.
