the more I deliver to these miss managed places the more I wonder...what is it about grocery warehouses that makes them the way they are? mainly their almost religious devotion to appt times and always requiring either a driver assist or a lumper fee. Plus just the "odd feeling" u get being there. Why can't they just be cool like most other recievers?

Part of the reason is it is their world. A lot of product is being accepted on consignment, so the product still belongs to the shipper until sold. The receiver also has to print up labels with barcodes so it can be tracked into their system.

Grocery warehouses hire the dregs of society and the misfits of the local communities.
They will shaft a driver any time they get the chance and talk down to the drivers.
One guy I will never forget; I asked him about pallets and he looked at me and screamed, "Hi, how ya doing?" Every time I tried to ask him about pallets, he would just stare and scream ,"Hi, how ya doing?" He was being a typical grocery warehouse smart aleck. He never answered my question.
I made a game out of payback and short stacked the load a couple cases of butter and kept it then loaded about 100 empty pallets on the trailer and a few miles down the road, sold them for $2 or $3 dollars each.
They love new 0/0's hauling produce. They will reject the load then tell the 0/0 to just leave it on the dock so they can throw it in the dumpster. If the drivers does this, then they print up some phoney bills and put the produce in the warehouse, then a check is mailed to their private "business" account. So, now someone made a few thousand dollars by stealing from the new 0/0. Sometimes they just downgrade it then threaten the broker or shipper to return or reject the load if they don't get a better price on it. They blame the driver usually saying the temp must have been to warm on the trip and to cover their tracks they steal the tattletale that's in the trailer and say there wasn't one in there.
They won't change, so learn how to payback. Personally, I never forget a grievance against me and truly enjoy payback.
There's thousands of stories like this and they happen every day.

Grocery warehouses sucked 40 years ago and looks like nothing changed.
Back when I started Union drivers fingerprinted their loads and the warehouse guys pulled the pallets out. You can thank the teamsters union for spoiling them with free labor and it became the normal way to do business.
The teamsters did it so the could have more members, if everything was forked off the would have not needed as many drivers.

That's the thing though. It isn't their stuff; not until they count/condition and hand you a signed BOL.

As for strict appt. times; can you imagine if these places went fcfs? You think it's a cluster now? It'd be a hot mess like you've never seen before.

I think I'd take my chances with FCFS. The inefficiencies in the distribution of groceries should be on the shipping and receiving docks in the form of more available labor to load and unload. The system we have now is forcing the inefficiencies out onto the highways, where the risk to life and property is greater.

Certain things will never change. They don't have to change. They know that. The vast majority of you guys are sooo stupid that they can have you pay them for you to perform stupid pet tricks. You join the circus to see the world, but you're paying money to be a clown? How the heck does that work?
