How much did truckers earn in past decades? 1990s? 1980s? 1970s?

1972 teamsters hourly pay was 5.00, big bucks compares to the 2.00 hr I was making.
Mileage pay was .09 to .21.( non Union)
In 1990 Schneider bought IT and took all the percentage pay away and paid a flat .80 per mile.

 

My dad drove from the late 40s to early 90s. When I was a kid and paid attention to what he said he was earning, he said $0.13 a mile. This was in the mid 70s. He also said that had been what he earned in the 60s.

 

My first driving job paid 11 cpm..1972.

 

Started with FFE @ 19 1/2 cents a mile in 93

 

Wow! From 75 to 93 it went up 6.5 cents a mile.

 

Lol pretty sad huh . I was just shy of 22 years old . By the time I was 22 I was a trainer making both sides of the miles and 75 a week in trainer pay . Around a thousand a week . I think I was up to .21 six months in

 

End of '73 and first part of '74, I had a tanker job that paid $37 a day, 6 days a week and no bennifits. I was single, but most of the drivers were married and raising a family. Some had been there many years.

Be careful trusting truckers and their wages. I use to know a driver that would carry around a pay stub with vacation pay added and show other drivers how much he made just to see them get spooled up and never tell them the truth.

I also knew guys back then that made big cpm, but they only got paid loaded and always ran home empty.....

Other's jobs always look better. Age old problem.

 

I remember reading the Sunday Star Ledger classifieds in the late 80's and seeing an ad for APA Transport. The Ad stated 50,000 a year. This is in New Jersey btw. Got my articulated in 1989 (CDL came in 91). First job was a 26' straight truck to the city for 12 hr.

 

Not entirely accurate. A typical Walmart driver works 75 Hrs per week…no OT pay. If the typical dockworker clocked that many hrs, he would make more than the driver…
