instead of having sensors and software that detects NOX levels and calculates how much DEF to spray blah blah blah

Why not have a box like a wet kit hydraulic fluid container be full of def and simply blow the exhaust through the fluid and when the fluid is full of soot and other things they want out of the exhaust you simply change the fluid.

Or am I not understanding the DPF process. From what I read it sprays def into the exhaust when it detects certain levels of certain gases changing it to soot that can be burned in the DPF and make the exhaust cleaner.

I don't think it works like that. You know, people a whole lot smarter than us have been working on perfecting the systems for years. It may not be perfect, but they are doing the best the can for the time being. Time will work out the bugs.

DEF is injected into the SCR and reacts with a catalyst to reduce NOX (actually converts it to nitrogen and h20). Completely separate from the DPF system that is just a filter that collects soot and periodically burns it off.
