Is it worth a new truck with proper cash investment

A good truck is really hard to give up. A bad truck due to previous owner abuse, neglect or straight hate is a drain on your soul, heart and life. I happen to have a SUV that is currently a money pit, but the technology from the 90's in that vehicle is not too difficult to bring up to 100% repaired or replaced with a sufficient amount of money and time.

 

I know you dont, I was just suggesting a good alternative to a $150k new truck

 

If I were you I would get those 3 to 5 years experience and in the meantime stick that money you have saved right into oil futures or an ETF. I think it's definitely bottomed out and looks to be going nowhere but up despite all the negative propaganda trying to keep it down. Who knows, good chance it will double by then.

 

3-5 years to get experience! You guys are crazy. One year of driving and one year of reading this forum and you will know everything you need to know

 

Keep in mind with a big fleet truck it was likely driven by one or several inexperienced people who may not have cared if they tore it up or not. Big fleets will go up to 50K miles between oil changes to save money knowing they are going to get rid of it before it becomes a problem. Small fleets and O/Os are going to treat equipment like they need it to last. I would look for something from a small fleet or O/O first.

 

How about you make friends with other guys out there running their own show, learn from the good ones, and find some O/O work that pays enough to own a truck and have a life? Sometimes I meet those guys at church or even at the bar! Just regular joes.

 

My 2 c worth -- find a small fleet owner that is looking to retire, and offer to buy his business after working for / with him for three years. Put a succession plan in place and in three years or so, you'll have the knowledge to run the place profitably with a very modest investment.

 

At least 25 hours of butt time at the T/A driver's counter listening to lies and #### lies should also be a prerequisite.
