The pictures on another site show the toll booth damaged, but still standing

The toll booths at the outer entry points (like this one was) are unmanned. Just grab a ticket out of the dispenser. I assume this occurred on the north bound ENTRY side since the story mentioned the van was "stopped to get a ticket".

Given all of the terrible accidents that occur at toll both locations, it's no wonder all the states have done all they can to reduce the numbers of toll booth points by whatever means available, and make as many of them un-manned as possible. They probably have a hard time hiring people to work the manned locations given the dangers and risks. Would you want to be standing in the middle of an interstate at 02:00 in the AM, working for peanuts?

At least many of the manned locations are AFTER a hard turn exit, and these should eject many of the sleeping or distracted drivers before reaching the toll booths to pay.

If you run I88 in Illinois, after a certain hour the manned toll plazas aren't. You pick up a sheet of paper explaining how to pay online.

Accidents like this is why they eliminated cash toll booths. Years ago, one lane would be stopped why you tossed some change in a toll booth, and the lane beside you, another driver is going 60 mph because he has a Pikepass.

Now they have a Pikepass lane and another lane that takes a picture of your license tag and mails you the bill.

Kansas needs to get with program. No stopping or slowing down at any toll booth.

I am glad, it doesn't appear to be a large company.

I'm not sure if this applies in the case of Kansas, but I know in Oklahoma they need to have some CONSISTENCY with their toll booths. Some you run at freeway speed in the main lanes while those that need to pay cash exit to booths on the side, with some those with the KS/OK tag have to get in the hammer lane and run the booth at a maximum speed of 30 mph, and others if you have the KS/OK tag you exit on the right at either 20 mph or at 75 mph.

Mixing up the protocol like this is a recipe for disaster.
