Rail works for certain things like stocking the shelves from a port to like an Amazon warehouse. Other then that you have to still truck the product from the rail yard to it's destination, sorting, storage I'm sure is not free, labor to unload and onto truck and so on.
Lone Ranger 13 Thanks this. -
In my last life we used to get lumber on rail from BC. You better know what your doing because once a rail car was ordered it was 3 to 4 weeks on the train to Chicago. While tracking the shippments we were lied to about its eta. Seems the closer to the yard it got the more they lied. We then had to have it trucked from the yard in Chicago down to our plant about 100 miles. (4 1/2 truck loads per car)
Buissness before that we would get equipment shipped from Demnark to San Diego CA. It was about 3 months from ordering the container to Recieving in CA. There was absolutely 0 communication from them until the day it arived. I have found that most places I work with in Flatbed are not that organized or don't utilize the quantities nessasary to get a rail cars worth.
If I recal the savings on the lumber Transportation was about 20% over strait trucking.Last edited: May 1, 2016

In answering one of the questions Munger mentioned how, after 10 years of planning and reports, environmentalists just blocked BNSF's plans to build a $500 million rail yard by the port of Long Beach. The project would have greatly increased the efficiency at the port, lowering demand for trucks (which pollute way more per ton hauled).
I know it is important for Berkshire Hathaway that BNSF improve its service (and they have dramatically in the Bakken -- just as oil fell off), but they're clearly getting frustrated by the fact that despite a willingness to spend big bucks (a rarity with rail companies), most jurisdictions make it almost impossible to expand their footprint.
The number of miles of rail has been basically flat since 1990 (which was about half of what it was in 1970), but due to the explosion of intermodal containers freight volumes have steadily grown over those decades.

I thought that customs was going to start building a processing facility in AZ so they could bulk move cargo there via train to be processed? That way a large quantity of the trucks would not have to negotiate LA area?
