Look it up as single use or just as trip permits. Every state has one or their version of such. To me it's not worth catching the eye of a cop for not having something. They are usually just good within the state but that's better than nothing.

Your new job should give you the permit, if you've already been accepted baring drug test.

Request extended time off, drop the trailer somewhere and bob tail to new location before quitting current gig

It is a temporary registration and cab card. Not the plates. Should all you need. If that company doesn't know what papers to send for you to get your truck to them, I would go elsewhere.
Oh, and you need to pick up a logbook and keep your previous 7 days while transporting the truck. -
How far do you have to go, and what state(s) do you need to run in?
-
Worst case scenario 600 miles from PA to IN. Best case 140 miles from MI to IN.

Is the truck still insured? Myself, I would just drive it straight through during the night. If you do get caught worst case will be a ticket, fine and your truck towed to an impound lot.
Or, park your truck, take the bus to orientation, get the plate and take the bus back.
Or, just drive it like you stole it.
