Covicted Felon Determined to be a Trucker, seeks advice.

Texas is good; no personal income taxes. Lots of trucking lanes thru the state.

 

Long Beach City college has truck driver training.They haven't opened it yet though.I was told it may take between a few weeks to months.Preference is given to women and veterans.Completely free,or rather it's covered by grants.There still is out of pocket expenses,not sure about all of those though.

 

Werner and Swift get bashed a lot, but I trained with Werner a decade ago and my trainer stayed with them till he retired last year. Both have safe equipment, will never ask you to run illegal, and offer good benefits. After a year of experience a ton of options will open up! Have you checked into Schneider? If you're near a port they might have a tanker terminal nearby, and tanker companies normally treat drivers very well.

 

Just do what you have to do to get started.. Swift does have good training; I just don't like them being able to monitor conversations inside the truck.

Some new driver posted last week he showed up for Werner training and they now do hair follicle.

 

Better too long than too short, there is more time to learn the basics.

OP, you're getting some good recommendations here and will get more. My only advice is maybe don't use your screen name on applications. Overcoming your past is challenging enough without going by "STEELY"

 

Swift don't hire people with felonies or atleast that's what they told a friend of mines who had a 20 year old felony on his record.
