One word, EXPERIENCE.... or lack of it...

A lot of newer O/O at our company have no other trucking experience, they simply don't understand how good they've had it......but their gonna learn.....

    I've heard a lot of recruiter B.S., others haven't....

I know that I’m coming late to this conversation, but I run for JB and I’m running my numbers and doing my homework to become an o/o. but with jb as a company I am grossing pretty good. So I believe that the opportunity to make money in intermodal is there, you just have to keep the operating cost as low as possible and be willing to put in the hard work, with running your numbers and running as profitable as possible and get out of the company driver mindset.

I did container out of NIT, VIG and rail out of norfolk southern in virginia. I was making better money than some owners that's over the road. I clear $2300 most weeks after expenses, you have your slow weeks and your good weeks just like anywhere else but my average was $2300. home every night and off on weekends. I like containers because most companies don't baby the drivers like the otr companies. If you are a road driver you get up early run your load come back pick up for the next day or if you have time do a local. Local drivers get up early run as much as you can and then go home. Long as they have the work they don't hold you back they give you the work. Some cans are overweight, you are suppose to get an overweight pay and also refrigerated pay if it's refrigerated, some companies don't want to pay those. Over all I prefer running containers than being otr.

So, let me give you a warning about being an O/O for JB intermodal. THis comes from our O/O who did it for 10 months, he lost money on every load. He has his own authority, own insurance, etc., when he is working for us, he uses my company as the broker and for our SCAC at the ramps, otherwise he's on his own. When he pulled for JB, he was not allowed to use his authority, everything had to be done through them 100%, and they paid him as such. They also refused to let him work on his own truck, they made him bring it to their mechanics for work and nickel and dimed him for it.

I'm hauling containers. Working Monday - Friday, driving an average of 2000 miles per week I make an average of .80 - .90 cents per mile after fuel.
the most I drive in one day is 700 miles, and that is once or twice in a month so I'm at home every night.
my advice is: if you have truck payments, don't do it.
if you don't know basics mechanics don't do it.
if you need medical insurance don't do it.
if you have an expensive truck, don't do it.
also, insurance is more expensive than regular over the road insurance
other than that IT IS HEAVEN!!!!!!

Your with the wrong company chief!!!....doing the same thing made 1.40 after fuel last year.....this year line haul (and work availability are down, but it's still higher than .80 CPM.....but I do agree, a new truck payment would be a pain!!!!
