Accidentally dropped engine oil bottle's cap in my diesel tank

If you try to fish it out with any tools or devices take special care not to drop them into the tank also

 

Newbie Question:

Why does one add motor oil to their diesel tank?

Lets it flow into the engine better for increased mpg.... Amazing economy when you're hooked up to a tow truck!!

 

The only thing you want in fuel tank is fuel. Everytime you get low in fuel you need to try and get this out. ASAP especially if the cap has any plastic or any other sealer(cardboard etc..) that may come out of the cap. IF it is just a cap about the size of a half dollar coin you may be ok but it still needs to come out. Small items or plastic can get sucked into the pick up tube and cause your engine to run rough or overfill that tank.

 

Had a cap off a quart of atf fall in my tank years back. Didn't worry about it. 3 months later I started having issues with one tank sucking dry. Guess what that little cap was getting sucked up on the end of pickup tube. Get it out of there. It won't hurt anything but will sooner or later mess with you. I ran mine low on fuel then parked on a incline so the end of tank with fuel cap was lower, got lucky it floated to where I could see it. Took one of those three finger grappling rods with the button to operate it on one end and plucked right out.
