I don't want too step on any toes here With the forum, but I'm curious if any owner operators would be interested in starting a blog with me? Could be about giving advice,a real incite to being an owner operator, talking about gadgets and things yay help you do your job better etc.

I've only been an o/o about a month, and the forum has been a great tool for me, I've been thinking about starting a blog to document my experience and talk about anything I feel, just curious if anyone else would be interested in reading or writing.

I already have internet space for many other things I do (business website, personal website, personal/business email, etc) so it's just a matter of setting it up, was just curious about getting input.

    Thanks

A blog -- a serious blog -- would be quite an undertaking and it will suck up a lot of time. You'd need at minimum good, solid, well-written, snappy, clever, interesting text; good photos; really good video clips with really good sound and music (copyright issues are, well, issues). Google "Road Rage Little Trucker" and "Trucking Diaries Facebook" for examples of truckers' blogs as art. Also look up "Patrick 7784" and "Iwona" on YouTube. The woman who does "Trucking Diaries Facebook" used to put up clips on YT. You can find them by searching "Tekilka 29."

You'd have to give people a reason to look at your material more than once. There are thousands of trucker blogs. Most are hit and miss affairs. Some offer advice. (No disrespect, but after just a month as an O/O [or are you leasing from a carrier and to the same carrier?] what sound advice can you offer?)

So ... since blogs are personal statements ... write one about yourself. Who do you drive for? Are you OTR? Local? Dedicated? Where did you grow up? Married with or without kids? Military service? So far, are your experiences on the road worth sharing? We all have stories to tell, but some stories are more interesting than others; the readers decide, not the blogger.

A blog is much more than just a matter of setting it up. You've got to commit to keep it going. Most people start blogs and then they fade away because blogs are hard work. Also, if you do get one going, be prepared for insults, criticism, trolls, the usual. One good policy is not to delete insults, but to grade them. The big question is: do you think you can put up a blog that stands out? The best way to answer that is to look at what other people are doing and then do something different.

Allot of the things you mention are actually the reasons I want to do this; as far as running the blog that's no issue. Before driving truck I ran a rather successful one on home improvement documenting the house I lived in and was fixing up. When I started driving the improvements became few and far between, and eventually shut it down. That's what inspired me to do this one.

I'm not new to OTR, but I am new to o/o and that's my main topic, to document my journey and encourage/discourage others that may want to travel this road, but aren't sure yet. I talked to probably 100 owners before I pulled the trigger, and everyone had their own opinion. I found many saying if they could do it again they wouldn't, but also noticed the reasoning they all had was similar; it's too much work.

I simply want to document my journey so anyone can go and see what I endured from the very beginning and use that to make their decision easier.

That brings up the next point; I was seeing if others would be interested in joining me. The more honest opinions and good stories the better. Others wouldn't have to tell all from the day they signed the papers obviously, but they could give their opinion and show what they personally deal with. More content always means more reason to follow, as long as it's good content, obviously.

Thank you also for the examples. In my searching I found a few of the bad variety, and honestly figured their could be better content out there, i just couldn't find it, so again thank you for that.

I look forward to reading your blog and I like your idea of asking folks to contribute. I'm too busy with my own projects so I can't chip in. "TruckNorris." Great name! I took Kenpo lessons from a Black Belt who fought Norris in competition and he said Chuck was an unrelenting, unforgiving fighter and just about unbeatable.

Yeah, there's a lot of silly blog/You Tube stuff out there, but it's easy enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. The quality stands out.

I was already retired when I discovered Trucking Diaries and I was blown away -- it was the only YouTube material that made me think seriously about getting back on the road; it was that good. Alycia's clips aren't a blog, of course. I still think Road Rage was/is the best trucking blog I've ever seen, but that black background makes it hard to read.

    Safe trip.

Thanks for the name props; it originated from an old Chevrolet pickup I was working on, I told people wherever it got done it would terrorize the streets, unfortunately life happened and the truck didn't. Many years later here I am holding onto the name and I quickly realized this semi fits the bill, let's just say with the kitty cat under this hood I haven't been passed on a hill yet ;)

I think I may go ahead with this even if it's alone. Others may come along later, or not. One big thing I'm interested in that wasn't available for my last blog is podcasts. Especially in this industry it's often easier to listen than read; I'd like to offer both.

I've actually considered do something of the same maybe not so much of a blog but more of a trucking informational site and my personal win/lose deals idk. I figure I already run 2 sites I don't want a 3rd and I'm not sure I want to do that on my company site so I decided to skip it.

You should go ahead and just do it, start uploading things then see if you want contributors.

I've already written a few posts, and the other day I set up a blog on my personal web space, I've uploaded a few posts but finding the time to retype them has been tough.

If either of you, or anyone else wants to take a look shoot me a PM, I'm not throwing my personal website on here, lol
