I have a GE 40 channel model 3-5840B from like the 70's and a mike from Radio Shack bout the same time plugged into the lighter, I just bought a new 39" steel magnet mount from Radio Shack and took the SWR meter to it and as far as i could figure out with the distructions it was between 1 and 1.5 (don't know what it means) i have it on top of the roof of my truck with the coax running down the back under the truck and up through the door under the trim to the radio. Im receving better than i was with my old antenna. I've heard about hard wiring it but don't know how i have a 91 Ford F-150. any advice to improve my setup would be helpfull, I like to listen and talk but i don't know how to improve it.

    Thanks
    Kyle

well the setup you have sounds pretty good.... seems like its doing a decent job. 1 to 1.5 is what you wanna aim for. i mean if you like the steel whip and really do want a way to improve it go with a longer whip, the longer the better.

The good thing about wiring the radio to the battery (with an inline fuse of course) is that you will have a power outlet for other needs.

so pretty much get a longer antenna if you want to upgrade, and the hard wiring is up to you...

I've head about those 102" whips but it sounds like whoa almost taller than my truck and if i go longer whould i have to take the SWR meter to it again?

yes, yes you would, you need to take the meter to it any time you change anything.... (except the radio) you SHOULD take it to it if you move the antenna, change it, change the coax, or anything.... it would be best. I know the 102" steel whips are ugly as sin, but they make up for that in performance.

Lol now where whould i go about buying one of them 102" the longest i've seen around is 64", and whould i have to mount it somewhere else than the roof cause it would be so tall, and is there a good SWR meter that's cheap cause i don't think the guy at the radio shack will let me buy it again and return it again. i didn't see the need to keep it since i had only planned to use it once and for 50 bucks it was expensive. Whould a Cb shop tune it for you?

scanner is just a novelty, and to get the full use of it, you need to look up freq's for plaes you will be. the local scans normally do not have the full range of the scanner... save your money... i enjoy listening to it around my home town... but thats a bout it. i use it more for it weather band feature.
