Hi good day.
I'm wanting to know if this is a good idea or not . My cousin is an independent owner operator, Currently has 2 trucks and a 3rd on its way. (business is looking great)
He mention to me that I could get in the business as well. In short what he told me was that if I would of ever get a truck he will manage the rig for me and all he will win is 10% of what the truck makes. This managing includes the following.
*Takes care of fueling
*If something would of happened to the rig he would go on site and fix issue(flat trie ect)
*Hiring the drives
*Provided me recipes slips for all the times the rig picks up a load and how much was the load
I just want an honest opinion if its a good idea or not. I know money is money and family is family but I'm a young man thinking of the future and thinking what I can do to get an extra income. My step dad used to drive trucks I loved when he took me on the trips. I have not seen any of my friends or people my age where I live come up with this idea before.
Letting someone else manage my truck.

Keep family and business separate. If you want to buy a truck and put a driver in it, fine, but lease it onto a carrier if you don't want to be hands on.
KriegHund Thanks this. -
How do you know business is looking great? Did you see his financials? Arrow had a lot of trucks too and look how that turned out.
There's a lot more to this trucking thing than just buying a truck. If you decide to do this you need a backup plan in case your cousin is wrong.KriegHund Thanks this. -
All I can think to tell you is if any of my cousins offered to let me in on their business that I didn't know anything about, I would run fast.
-
Hahaha thank you so much for the advice

I was looking into that. Some of these Carriers have like strict policies about the truck they get like the year or the milage no?
-
Some do, but honestly, that's because you will have their name on the truck and they want to make sure your truck isn't detrimental to their image.... And if your truck looks like crap, you probably don't take care if it, which means it's broke down all the time and not reliable at servicing their customers.

Thanks so much for taking time to reply

Sounds to me like your going to be the third truck. Don't ever get into business with family. You need to learn the pros and cons of trucking business first anyway. And you need to also know how your gonna cover your ### when that driver you hired quits. And most importantly, use spell check PLEASE!d_morel89 Thanks this.
