We are neighbors. I would do Western express, fulfill the contact to get your feet wet. Then go to BigG. I have a few friends that tried that and have started and stayed at WE, it isn't as bad as you read here.
My brother is about to leave Henderson now that his year is up and go to to them or Beacon. -
Western Express's site says they offer hometime on weekends....probably just for their flatbed, but I could contact them. Still just can't get into them. They are made out to be just slightly above CR England. I can deal with crappy pay, but hometime and safety are big concerns.
Here is my list I have narrowed down to for SE Regional and/or dedicated:
schneider
star
Venture Logistics
dartco
arnold
baylor trucking
ho wolding
watkins shepherd
milan
Maverick (if they would even consider me)
Millis if I don't go to the local school for some reason.
Watkins Shepherd is kind of a wildcard in how they just have 10 days of on site training and, for better or worse, seem to do a lot of stops.
I'm open to hearing good or bad from any of these or more. I will probably apply to most of them while in school and take whichever fits my needs the best.Last edited: Jan 7, 2016

Welp, I made slightly too much for the grants. For those wondering, you have to make less than 28k a year. I did last year, but they figure it by your last 6 month's earnings multiplied by 2. I made very slightly above that when figured like that since I got a better job 7 months ago.
Going to try to contact Venture Logistics again. They claim on their site to have a "free" cdl school, along with a lot of regional opportunities. Seems like a pretty decent company, actually. Going to go ahead and talk to RE West probably, also.
I really want Regional now that I got a decent list of ones that will take students, so if those two don't pan out, I will probably just get on with paying the local cdl school and getting it over with.Chinatown Thanks this. -
There used to be a CDL school in Lebanon.

There is one there, but i am cool with my local one if that's the route I take.
So, I sent apps to RE West, Venture Logistics, and Millis. I am out of Venture's Logistics's hiring area, though they do hire out of Nashville. I did get an interview for RE West this Friday, so we will see how that goes. All I got over the phone from that I didn't prettymuch know was that he claims 2-3 days home for every 7-10 on dry van and about 14 for their flats. There's a couple of people on here that claim to get home every 5 days even though they were told this, so I guess I could see.
I could save $3-$5k on CDL school without a contract with them, so I may very well take my chances with them even if they pay on the low side and have some manual unloads (which my waistline will probably be needing
)

It's too bad CSA stopped making companies' safety scores public. Now safe companies can't really show off their good safety scores and unsafe companies don't have any accountability...
Anyway, you should be able to find a decent company that will reimburse your tuition. I know when I started they said they reimburse tuition in full up to $10,000, but I've never heard of any school that cost that much! But you'll land yourself somewhere decent if you're already doing your research. Plenty of companies looking for drivers, but that doesn't mean they're a good fit for you. -
I have been truck driving for 12 months and I love it. I started with CR England in February 2015. Now that I know what I know I wish that I took another route to get my CDL. CR England paid me .14 cents per mile and they put me under a contract which prevented me from getting another job while I was under their employment contract or I could buy them out of the contract by paying them the sum of $7,500. Needless to say I didn't have $7,500 laying around. So I stuck it out and fulfilled my contract over 9 months. I am OTR driving 48 states. When my contract was completed I quit the next Following day and joined Swit with no contract because I did not attend their school I worked for Swift for 3 months. Now I have 12 experience with a perfect drivingrecord I am now moving to a new company that pays .38 cents per mile. The good news is that with this company I only needed 3 months of experience to be hired. They allow me to have my pet on the truck with me if I choose. I will drive Western Regional with 14 days on and 3 days off. I think I will enjoy working for the new company. In fact I would like to bring along a rider for 14 days so the rider could see what trucking entails.
