I will list a normal week, the one I am in now.
I delivered this morning in Avon at 1000. Drop and hook. My next load was already waiting for me there.

I came to the house, where I will stay till some time tomorrow morning.

I will drive from here to Independence MO. From here that is about 900 miles.
I deliver there at 0900 Monday morning.

Once unloaded, I will deadhead to Granite City IL. right outside St. Louis. About 250 miles. I will check in there and drop trailer. Bobtail to Truck stop and do my 10 hour break. Plus a few hours usually.

In morning I will hook the loaded trailer and head back to Avon for a Friday delivery at 1000, where I will eather wait for unload, or if my next load is ready, I will hook it and head to the house.

It is about 1070 miles from Avon to Independence MO. So I run that weekly.
    mon-wed 1000 miles. Wed-Fri 1000 miles, Fri-Mon 1000 miles.
Most of the run is easy. The run from Granite City to Avon is a full day run. Because the load time is usually 2100, and my 14 is up then. That is why I check in and drop. This makes it so I have to run a 10-11 hour day to get most of the way to Avon. Usually North eastern OH, in a day. This way I do not have to run nights at all, and I can idle less.
On this run no resets are needed. I never run out of hours.
I am usually home Friday by 1430, I stay home for the night and leave Saturday morning. If I want days off I will usually take a Sat-Sun. This way I get home Friday after delivering my load. Leave Monday morning to pick up in Avon for a Wed Delivery.
I have also had it to where I am picking up on Friday in Granite city, when this happens the round is the same, but I am home Sunday night.
It is an every other week thing.

Mon-Avon, Wed-Granite city, Fri-Avon, Mon-Granite city, Wed-Avon, Fri-Granite city, Mon-Avon. Easer to show that way, just showing load sites. Not as confusing. I had confused myself lol.

As to how the split sleeper works. I really try not to use it. I may have used 2 times in the last year or so. You have to be very careful with it or the DOT will snag you.

If you are stuck at a shipper for 6+ hours, and it was early in your 14 when you got there it is nice to have. You can then just sit there to finish the 8, and get some miles in. The problem with this is that at many shippers you were not sleeping in that time. This can be an issue, because you may be too tired to use the split well.

Ok, lets say you start your day at 0745 with a 15 min pre-trip. It is now 0800.
Drive 150 miles to shipper. It is now about 1045, you check in, log the 15 min for that as on duty not driving. It is now 1100. And you are on the sleeper line.

You doze a little, read a book ect. Trying to get rest. The shipper had to make the product, and it takes 7 hours to get your trailer loaded. You have a choice to make. You can drive, but it is now 1800. You only have 3.75 hours left on your 14. You need to deliver this load at 0600 in the morning, 400 miles away. The most you will probably make it before your hours are up is about 215 miles.
You are pissed at this point. You have to call dispatch and say load will be late......
Or you can wait 1 hour, and you will be able to use a split sleeper provision.

You wait the hour. It is now 1900. You have 8 hours driving left you can use, and 10.75 hours of your 14 hour clock. You can make it the 400 miles in 8 hours. You will arrive by 0300. Go to sleeper for 2 hours (or off duty, but you need a nap at this point).
It is now 0500, and you are at receiver 1 hour early (if they did not take you when you arrived). And you have a full 14 hours ready to start for the day.

That night you must take a full 10 hour break. You will probably need it, unless you have your body use to running like this.

The thing to remember with the split sleeper provision. The 8 hours must be all together, no other line may be used, and may not be broken up at all. This is the only way to stop the 14 hour clock once it is started though.
The 2 hours can be sleeper or off duty. It cannot be a full long break though, I cannot remember the limit off the top of my head, I know you cannot take an 8 hour break or 10 hour at this point, needs to be 2 hours.

All the provision really does is allow you to stop the 14 clock, and reset your 14 in a short break after. It can be useful in bad situations like I described. But I would not use it often. With proper planning you should not get into these situations very often.

If I messed up anywhere please let me know and I will edit.
At first I forgot to put in my pre-trip, so I may have messed up the numbers somewhere. It should give the general idea of how it is used though.

Great - that helps a lot. So if you wanted to you could actually have the weekend and not run at night. Sounds like a good schedule. The split makes sense now but definitely seems a little crazy, unsafe :biggrin_25518:and too easy to mess up and get nailed.

So when you are off i90 to the house is that pd miles?

Thanks for taking the time to detail :thumbleft:

They pay me for the route. They don't pay me when I go home, because this is out of route. Only by like 30 miles though.
By company policy they could charge me 1.00 for each out of route mile, but I have never heard of them doing this. I am guessing if someone was caught going a hundred plus miles out of route they would be charged though.

If I really wanted too I could stay here all day Saturday and run that night, Sunday as soon as my 10 is over, and Monday morning to deliver on time. Or even early Sunday morning (0300) and still deliver on time. But I do not like to run like that. I would have to sleep in the day, meaning run the truck while I sleep, or sleep in a 130 degree truck.

You can kind of see why I really don't like the split now.
I really wish I could take a 10 when it is time to take the 2. It would work then. But to do it you have to take the 2, then log on for 15 min, and then take the 10. That would suck. But sitting at a shipper or receiver for 6 hours does in fact happen at times. Normally for me it was usualy at shippers that I got to a little late (due to planner error, that they made me accept). If you are late for an appt for pickup or delivery you cannot get detention time. So some shippers will just make you wait. Since they don't have to worry about being charged for it then.

Normally the longest waits are at meat processing plants. Try waiting 8+ hours for a trailer of Chicken Tenders some time. Then they will not let you leave the yard till the trailer reads below 25 degrees. The product was alive just seconds before it is on the truck. Not chilled at all. So you have to wait while it gets cold. I was lucky to only get a few of these loads while I was full 48 states. National Beef sucks too. They make you get there on time for appointment, only to then make you take a mandatory 10 hour break. Your trailer will be ready a few hours after that. No detention is paid for the 10 hours.
National Carriers can have 100% of that freight for all I care. The people at the Liberal plant are all losers, if you ask me.

National Beef, Liberal Kansas. They make you sit for 10 hrs? Smelling the burn of the Beef Blood and what ever else? I grew up just south of there, and I always hated going by that stinking place. I can't imagine having to sit there for 10 hours. Thanks Chrome for all your info!

I accepted a split load that picked up at a Volvo in TN, and I have a 2 day layover cause I am stuck at the notorious McClain Distribution center in MS. Avoid this place at all costs, they said sorry, your appointment is'nt until Sunday midnight, my dispatcher tried to get me out to a drop, but there was nothing running. It all boils down to fuel, is dropping this container worth a run, and is somebody else in the area. So here I sit. The only complaint I really have so far is my pay has not caught up. I know it is a week behind, but I was supposed to get a P.O. for a layover on my recovery and the bus ride for days not working adds up $350.00. A lot of miles are not adding up. I am keeping track of everything. I am sure we will get it squared away, I talkes to my DM and payroll today. My wife is in the legal field and alot of people are not paying thier bills. Every dollar counts right now, we have to get this economy turned around.

Wow, glad to hear that Dragon finally got out with a trainer. Hubby finished his 5th day today. He called in better spirits. He got to back the truck up in a straight line today. Tomorrow he gets to do a different one. Forgot what he called it...lol...He said the guy training them said he could tell who was gonna make it and he is top of the class, so i am happy for him. He never thought he'd be able to get out of the electrical trade until he started this.

Keep on them Hazzmater. They will fix it, but may take a while.
You can check your pay on Tuesday evenings online. Just go to the Central website, click on driver tools and log in. All your paychecks for months show up there.
And it is easer to save and print out from there than qualcom.
Also, there is a locater there. So if family wants to know where you are, they can click the link an it will show your location on a map. Or on a google earth type map with the old sat. image.

My wife tracks me all the time. Just need driver id, log id, and your 4 digit pin.
