Ever watch "Bait Car TV"? Ever see those guys trying to kick out the tempered side windows? Possible, but real hard.
Ever try breaking a side window of a truck?
I was once locked out of a truck and it was worth it for me to try and break out the side window to get back in rather than wait for a locksmith. I used a baby (short handled) sledge hammer. It just bounced off the window no matter how hard I hit the window. Probably because I hit the window with the flat part of the hammer rather than a pointed edge of the hammer.
Ever try cutting a seat belt with a knife? Doesn't work well, need scissors or razor blade for a clean cut.
Many accidents will cause the door to jam. In a Greyhound Bus you just kick the windshields out. That's how they're designed.
Small plane pilots often carry a crowbar to pry the door open after a mild crash.
Just a thought, carry one of those seatbelt rescue tools that cleanly cuts the seatbelt and has a pointed metal piece to break the window.
BUT make sure it's secured close to you so it won't get lost during a roll over at night. Nothing scarier than being stuck in a truck following a crash.
Another idea, Walmart sells smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Keep one in your truck.

I was just reading the other day that the reason car and trucks have pointed ends on headrest bars is so that in the event you need to bust a window you can remove it from the seat and use that. Won't help in a semi, but good info to remember in your pov.
As for my truck. I keep a box cutter handy for my unloading duties, so i guess i would use that to cut a seat belt off. And something tells me my fire extinguisher into a window enough times would bust it eventually.

I had no problem breaking my freightliner window out with a load lock...

Ball pene hammer, and a utility knife within arm's reach oughta do the trick.

I don't think the box cutter will work any differently than a knife.
I tried cutting a seat belt with a knife. It would have taken forever, because of the threads of the seat belt, they just tear sloppily. You need scissors or the blade in those seat belt cutters.
The blade in a seatbelt cutter is held more securely than I think a box cutter is. Go to a junk yard and try the box cutter on a junk car.
Don't wait till you crash to try it. -

Front windshields are designed to be kicked out, also windows break easily if pressure is applied by a point rather than an area. The only thing that will save you in such an event is maintaining calm.
WisconsinF150 and Highway Sailor Thank this. -
I know on an MCI (Greyhound Bus) the windshields are designed to be kicked out.
I've seen them installing windshields on cars and Kenworths. I've also seen them trying to remove windhsields on cars and Kenworths.
It seems like they have a hard time removing them. How sure are you that they are designed to be kicked out on anything but a bus?? -
It takes a concerted effort, I am about 75% sure.WisconsinF150 Thanks this.

I can just use tape with a window punch on my knife to keep it from breaking into smaller pieces.
WisconsinF150 Thanks this.
