I think its more or less what do you want to do? I've always wanted to be a truck driver since I was a kid(about 5). When I got my licence I drove a 5 ton and loved it. When I could get my 1 I did. When I had my first daughter and did long haul I hated it but secretly loved it but had to (in my opinion) do the right thing and got a job in town. Every day I watch these long haulers drive further when I get off the exit and wonder. Guess what I'm trying to say is if you don't have anything to go home to, it could be pretty cool if its what you want to do. The pay don't mean nothing if its something you want to do and you don't have anything to pay off. Eventually after working for not amazing pay you will have gained experience. And then with that experience you can move into something that may pay more. You'll have a little more pull to get what you want. No one can take that experience from you. But like I said... Only do it if its something you really want to. Getting paid peanuts doing something you love be beats being miserable and grumpy doing something you hate while wondering what could have been.
Looking for some info on training..

Well, first of all, good luck Pells, I hope that you find a job that makes you happy, trucking or not...
I am also looking for a school. These guys are very proud of being certified by the PTDI and they keep saying that their graduates get a job right after school, a lot of decent companies are looking to hire their students etc, etc...

So, I think what I'm trying to ask is:
Anybody have an idea about 5th Wheel Training Training Institute? -
Insurance companies will recognize this certification the same as three years experience? Lol.... They are trying to make themselves sound like they are offering a red seal course. Anyone will be offered a job. As long as you have a heartbeat.
-
It sounds like a huge BS, right..? Do you have a general idea about their training? Or any other school in ON that you can suggest?
-
I'm in Manitoba, so can't help you there. Personally, I would ask for references from graduates and call them. If everyone says it's the greatest thing since canned milk, red flag.DiemPerdidi Thanks this.

Don't get discouraged by the negative comments. Like a lot of jobs it's what you make of it.
I would suggest that if you were willing to spend $11k you should go to http://www.drivemti.com Mountan Transport Institute. They are tough, if they don't feel you have the aptitude to drive a truck they will cut you out early to save their time and your money. Doesn't mean you have to have the skill, just the willingness to learn. Several trucking and insurance companies out west recognize their training as being equal to a years experience so you can get hired after graduating.
It would mean sometime from home as they are at Castlegar, BC in the heart of the mountains. Lots of fun driving in that area.DiemPerdidi Thanks this. -
Mountain Training Institute in Castlegar used to give you a 3 year rating. Of course, you also had to train on logging roads.
DiemPerdidi and uncleal13 Thank this. -
I stand corrected, I remembered that it got some kind of credit.
Prairie Boy Thanks this.
