Cotton if possible.
Jeans are fine, but can dig into your waist ... Which you won't notice for hours.
Honestly, I unbutton mine when I remember to.
Elastic isn't good for the same reason.
I wear boots most of the time...even with shorts. Cotton socks help wick moisture as well, if not better than sandals.
Sandlals aren't rigid enough for driving in my opinion and can fatigue your feet in some cases plus they are a liability in an accident or if you need to do some heavy foot work without notice.
Here's a tip...
You can stuff pillow cases with extra clothes like soft jackets and they will serve dual purpose. -
