I have no experience in the industry and looking at different options for CDL training. I'm not opposed to a private CDL school but I'm ready to get to work too. I don't have a preference for what kind of freight to pull. Home time isn't too important either. I want to run as far as possible. As in, Seattle to Jacksonville, FL; San Diego to Portland, ME, so to speak. It's a vague question but what are your thoughts as a place to start?

Abilene Motor Express runs those lanes. You will need to complete a cdl school first, then the company will hire you.
Lots of miles with that company and 100% no-touch freight for the driver. -
CRE get your license then quit immediately !

Portland? Go to Houlton or Presque Isle - the end of the 'big road'!

I just graduated my school last Friday. I did some pretty thorough research on my available options as I suggest you do as well. The first thing I looked into was a school that a carrier had. They would have brought me out to their location on a bus. Put me up in a hotel. Paid for nearly everything. I would have gotten my CDL A only, then had a contract to work for them at the next 9 months for .18 cpm. My other option was a local school. They offered 2 programs, a 20 day program where I only got my CDL A for $6k cash or a 5 month program where I got all endorsements (doubles/triples tanker and hazmat) for $10k financed. I qualified for $5,500 in government grants. The rest is in student loans.
20 day is intense and there is emphasis on not having time to fool around. It was from 7-5 m-f. It's not for everyone. I could have done it but glad I didn't. The 5 month is lax. 1 month of classwork. 2 straight months is backing. Then a month of driving forward. With all of that time we had 8 students and half failed their first test to get their license on their first road test. I think because it was so laid back is why. They passed the second time round though.
From what I've seen is that most 20 day guys are going to work for Schneider. Most other companies won't take 20 day graduates. With the 5 month course I've only seen a couple that won't take my school I went to. I guess the reason I was given was because it's a pass or fail school. They don't give an actual GPA. Don't know why.
Hope this helps. Any questions I'm here. -

Or SRT in Texarkana, they were all right when I was there, but that was a long time ago, before they had students.
Man that's a lot of coin. I thought $1600 cash was a lot when I got mine. -
This ain't no 10k question lol but to answer it get it on your own and it'll come out cheaper and no long term contracts
TequilaSunrise and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.
