I'm 25 years old and i live in merced california and after extensively researching this industry whether it be good or bad i'm giving this a shot and i know i have to pay my dues to find better opportunities which seem plentiful in thr central valley but know otr is where the main experience comes from anyway.
So the first few steps i already took care of which was finding a school(advanced career institute) and getting my DOT physical taken care of, tomorrow morning i start my first day in a 20 week program they're offering.
I use this forum frequently with a couple other sites to research with and i decided to register for this one finally so i can post my experiences here sometime after all this schooling is done!
I made the jump

Congratulations on your new career. Trucking is a great career if you approach it correctly which you seem to be doing. Get all the endorsements plus TWIC ID Card and passport/passport card.
Google for nearest TWIC office to apply. TWIC is used for entry to seaports, rail yards, chemical plants, military bases. All these look good on job applications and lead to the better paying jobs. This shows prospective employers you're well prepared and ready to roll.Mrbeefy Thanks this. -
Thanks guys!
I was told i'd be in school for the highest cdl(class A) and below so i'm curious if they didn't mention it as endorsements were included so they never thought to mention the existence of TWIC id/passport or worst case scenario they aren't. Regardless i will get it taken care of as this is important to me! so tomorrow i'll be asking my instructors about TWIC id/passports as they also schedule my appointments for further certifications(hazmat especially) down the road.Chinatown Thanks this. -
It's in your best interest to get all the endorsements, etc. before you graduate. Some companies won't hire you unless you have those or they may hire you contigent upon getting them.
You mentioned OTR; that's not a requirement for new cdl grads, but many drivers want coast to coast running. Some companies offer coast to coast or just Western states; your choice.
Trimac Transportation is about the best local job that hires new cdl grads. I don't know where the nearest terminal is, but there's one in Santa Clara that pays around $80K for local work. Anyway, that's just some ideas to think about for the long term, ie. graduation day.Mrbeefy Thanks this. -
Good luck to you! God bless you and your family!
