Okay folks, here's the deal. I am a tiny female (5'4", 115lbs.), from Pittsburgh, PA. I have very little upper body strength and am fresh out of CDL school. I have so far been to Schneider's orientation & U.S. Xpress's orientation and have failed both of their physicals because in Schneider's case, supposedly my heart rate went up too far (although how they can tell with cereal box heart monitors that spew out random numbers, I'm not sure, but that's another story I'll spare you) & in USX's case, I could not lift 48lbs. onto a shelf I could barely reach with just my hands & not holding anything (at least USX was nicer about it though...they seem like a very nice company and maybe after a few months of push-ups I'll try again).

Anyway, at this point I have totally given up on any company that will require any physicals beyond the basic DOT physical. I am in fine shape (27 years old) & can move tandems, use glad hands, couple, uncouple, use landing gear & do everything else except unload, I'm just not very strong in my upper body (if I had needed to get 48lbs. up to the USX height while out on the road, I'd use a step stool...makeshift if necessary...work smarter, not harder). I have no felonies, no DUI's, no reckless driving, no suspensions, and my last speeding ticket was almost 10 years ago. I also can't wait for a great company to come along, as I have bills to pay & must get a paycheck very soon. This has also made me willing to put up with a lot more crap than I would have been willing to put up with 2 weeks ago.

Despite my safe driving record, my size & strength have become such an issue that I am now begging to be given a chance in a truck. And since beggars can't be choosers, I now find myself headed for Werner. I know, I know, not a great decision necessarily based on the posts here, but I am stuck and need to get my experience somewhere. I have been well versed on how much a 1st year as a trucker can stink & am prepared for a too-green trainer with Werner (as prepared as I can be).

My question now is, to those of you who've been there, do you have any advice to help get me through what could be a very not fun time for me? Any Werner advice at all to make things any easier? Anyone have anything GOOD to say about them to make me at least feel slightly easier about all this?

    Thanking you in advance!

I went thru orientation for Werner a couple years ago, and I don't recall anything on their physical beyond the basic DOT stuff.
Maybe you should just call some of the training companies and just explain your situation to them and see what they say. Maybe save yourself a few steps, and some grief.

The physical I went through at DALTX was about as through as a wet paper bag. I think they took blood pressure asked if i was crazy and the doctor hit my knee to test reflex... thats it.

The hardest part about the orientation was staying awake, and not laughing at the stupid videos. Its long, but I don't recall heavy lifting (honestly I can't lift a 20 lb bag of dog food and I am much bigger then you... and fatter :biggrin_2554:)

there is no heavy lifting at all for Werners DOT physical, you shouldnt have to do any lifting, only if you are on Dollar General, or the Family Dollar account..never fingerprinted a load with them in the 2 1/2 years I've been with them.

werner just does the routine physical. I have worked for them twice and am going back again next week. They dont pay the best but they also can not severly abuse your logs as some other companies can. In my opinion it is a good training co but they do have some bad trainers.. I had 3 trainers one for a week he was terrible. The next was great and the one after that was great. If you get a bad trainer call up and request an other one they will give you one. Good luck

Werner sucks, but if it's your only choice, I guess it is slightly better than the unemployment line. They don't test anything beyond the DOT physical, and in my case (I just graduated from college, where I played football) all the doctor did was listen to my heart and ask me if I feel ok and then said, "Well, you played ball in college, and you look very healthy, I'm sure you're fine. Where did you play?" He was a nice guy, and I am in good shape, but it seemed a bit unprofessional. I hate everything about Werner except the fact that my fleet trainer is decent and I have not even touched a piece of freight yet. But the miles are below average, and they are so swap happy that in 4 months I have only picked up and delivered the same load once! And that's when you REALLY have to keep track of your miles and what they pay you for it. Go over your check EVERY WEEK and CALL PAYROLL if there is ANYTHING you don't completely understand. They will screw you every chance they have, but if you're on top of your $h!t, you should be ok. Good Luck! I'd find ANY other company (other than Swift or JB Hunt) if you can.

I worked for Werner for 15 months. I never loaded or un loaded. They were a 90 percent no touch as of 2006. They also allow you to hire a lumper, you need authorization first to do so.
