I've found that ex-drivers make either the best, or worst dispatchers.. no happy medium! but the biggest key to a good dispatcher is honesty and communication. I dispatched for 10+ years and the biggest thing I learned is to listen.
Let's talk about the 'driver shortage'.

There are two different types of drivers-turned-dispatchers because there are two different types of drivers: the one's who think it's important to follow the rules and the ones who don't.
superflow, Lepton1 and Regency Transportation Thank this. -
Personally I don't think you're qualified to tell the trucks what to do unless you yourself have gone out there and earned a living doing it, even if it was only for a couple years. Mega fleet trucking Inc who hires kids fresh out if college with their worthless communications degrees from Bozo State University have no clueLepton1 Thanks this.

Sounds like my guy. Couldn't make it as a trucker so yep in the office. Can't spell or communicate. I'd call that lazy with alittle stupid mixed in.

With the right training they can do ok but most of them get thrown to the wolves with no hours of service training, no clue about geography and pay measured on a bonus system that makes them more concerned with covering loads than doing what's right

There's a shortage of driver's ? That explains why there's no parking available. got it.

Experienced drivers should welcome the upcoming shortage. 5 years verifiable experience, clean CSA and 2 year medical card. If you are not making $60k a year you are not marketing yourself correctly, and with these new Medical Certificate regulations that went in effect April 20th 2016. We are about 2 years away from another industry wide pay increase.

What happened with the med cards? I just got a new one on Wednesday and didnt notice anything different.

Make sure your physical is on the new Federal form MCSA-5875. Effective April 20th that is the only form your state will except when you summit your Self Cert. No worries if you got your physical done at an Occupational Health or any physician that does DOT on the regular they will be squared away. The other changes are if you have every had a heart attack or been diagnosed with coronary artery disease. You must have a passed stress test less than 2 years old. There are some stronger requirements if you use a CPAP. FMCSA is really applying pressure to Doctor's that have a national registry #. This is going to effect mostly older driver and the obese . We will see a lot driver unable to renew their cards..

Below is a link. If that is you in your picture I doubt you have anything to worry about. Right wrong or indifferent FMCSA is thinning the driver pool.
