My family business was scrap metal and it plummeted worse than oil when oil dropped. I too were dumb. Blew it all on race cars and over extending myself. From 14 to 1.5-2 years ago (31 then, 33 now) I never worried about money so never budgeted. I'm glad things crashed now not when too old to recover. I'll tell you one thing I don't blow and go like I did, if I have extra I keep with exception of taking wife to dinner and a dozen roses now and again if money is there.

Schneider Bulk will reimburse your $6K tuition if you work for them. They pay you X amount a month until the tuition is paid in full. They do lots of work in LA and have a terminal there somewhere. Schneider Bulk is tankers.
Trimac Transportation will reimburse up to $5K tuition. They have 3 terminals in LA. After 24 months you can go to their Elite Fleet and make over $100K as a company driver.

Was it easier 10 years ago because these days driving tests seem to have changed and a lot harder?

Pretty sure the test is the same. 10 years ago they didn't just hand you your license.
