I rolled into the port on I-25 Northbound last week to be measured and pay for an oversize permit. The DOT officer ( Officer Fresquez ) came out with his tape and high pole, measured my load and said "yep, you'll need a pilot car"... I respectfully said "the shipper and I both measured this at 13'11" wide". He had no interest in discussing it further. He said "no, its 14'6" wide and you need an escort"... He told me to park on the right and come in and get my permit and call a pilot car. At that point I was getting fired up, I got my tape, measured the load and sure enough, 13'11" wide. He came back out to tell me to get off the scale, I said "Look, its not over 14 wide". At this point, our conversation turned contentious, I knew I was right and he was wrong, the tape doesn't lie. After a 20 minute shouting match and several threats of arrest and calling lawyers, he relented and let me go with no pilot car... Im guessing his cousin or wife has a pilot car company in Cheyenne.
The lesson here is, if you know you are right and a cop wants force you to do something you know you don't have to, stick to your guns. I would have LOVED to have cuffs on and be taken to jail. The lawsuit would have been amazing! I just wonder how many people have been bullied into calling this cops buddies to escort them when they didn't need to.

Atta Boy,
Good to Hear some of you folks standing up for what's right. I would have done the same .
These POE's or DOT officers get accustomed to the majority of drivers just Buckling down with their heads hung low saying 'yes sir" to these people without questioning anything If they know they did nothing wrong.osokusmc, drver60021, bzinger and 2 others Thank this. -
Pretty obvious he's getting a kickback from some pilot car company. Why else would he do something that stupid? He let you go because he knew you caught him lying.
NavigatorWife, bzinger, Guntoter and 1 other person Thank this. -
Dam that is crooked ...
WY has never given me a hard time. To be honest it kind of surprised me coming from that state... I thought WY was one state that generally performed reasonably well, considering all their mining operations and sparse population.. those are just my own thoughts though..DTP and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
@DenaliDad can give you the scoop on Wyoming.DenaliDad Thanks this.

Perfect! Absolutely ZERO engine problems. Only the usual (idler pulley, water in fuel sensor...). Been in the shop two days in four months and 40,000 miles.

I'm surprised as I have had nothing but good experiences with Wyoming. They have their own way of doing things, but have always been pleasant to deal with in my experience.

Really?
Did he offer the name of a pc service or just tell you to get one?
From the op, it seems he gave the you the option to call.
We had an issue with a poe on the west side of the state, said we needed to get a pc and I told the driver get the pc and camp out until it gets there, I will get one there the next day. A few hours later another officer came on duty and ask what was the problem, my driver explained to her what's what and she said get out of there. I never called because I knew this would happen.
If the guy offered to get one or said that they will arrange it for you, then there's a problem, but until that happen, nothing can be done other than get one or wait.Studebaker Hawk and NavigatorWife Thank this.
