I was red lining and stab breaking, to the point where shorter intervals almost made no difference. Me going 5 mph down a hill was not an option, as i passed the point of no return when I reached 35 mph... I "smoked" my breaks because I was trying to get down into the lower gears, which eventually I did. This wasn't my first time driving a truck without a jake break. But it was my first time driving in a day cab with no jake break. Get the ## out of here. I don't need a ####y trucker making this week far worse than it is by assuming I don't know how to drive down a a mountain, even though my daily route included Donner pass, which requires shifting up and down for an hour going into the sacramento valley. A beat up rental day cab with break issues, hauling almost 80,000 pounds, having trouble going up the slightest incline, will not do good on grades greater than 5%. And that was the least of my worry that day... probably 3rd on the list.

The company I'm with, I thought was reputable. I guess I was wrong? Or it could just be a bad personal experience.

I'll be looking at the route if I do decide to go O/O, but I prefer to do 6 more months as a company driver before i pull the trigger. Right now, just carelessly browsing the used trucks out there. Friend of mine is a diesel mechanic and is interested in trucking himself, so we may go in it together if I do decide to buy a used truck with less than 250,000 miles on it, possibly still under warranty.

You know, up until I read this post, I had some sympathy for you. But there are some things here that just don't add up. Like your profile saying you are in California. In post # 10 you say you are in Idaho:
So there is a fairly large discrepancy there. Then you say you go down Donner every day, but it would appear that you really don't know how to go downhill. Then you say you have driven a truck without a jake, but this was your first time driving a day cab without a jake. There's no big difference in day cab or road cab as far as jake is concerned.
Sounds to me like a whole lot of horse pucky. Are you a troll?

I went to the site of the company you say you work for in your profile. Why be so secretive?

Such a cliche response that gets a lot of support... "Are you a troll?". What am I suppose to be trolling? What's my gain here? I gave a backstory of my current situation, then asked a simple question in which I got a response from the one person that seems to be the most resourceful person on this entire website. You are making nothing out of something. When and if I decide to update my profile I created over a year ago, I'll ping you. But for the time being, yes, I'm from Idaho and yes my route required me to go up and down Donner's pass. And to settle this mystery, I'll go into a little more detail. I did drive a 2009 Columbia with non functional jake break, but did not drive down any serious, long grades. And yes, I do believe there is a difference, maybe not huge for you to notice super trucker, but i think so. Trucks, most of us OTR Truckers are used to driving have 400-500+ hp. The day cab was rated roughly 300 hp (?), weighed far less... you know what, let me just give you a link to what I was driving at the time:

    Veh.#3027372011NAVISTAR INTERNATIONAL8600- Ryder Certified™

This was a last resort at the time, and had to go into the middle of San Francisco to pick it up. I'm finished here. If you want to learn more about me and get a far more detailed backstory, you'll just have to hire a P.I.

All is resolved now, and thanks to those who responded professionally and contributed useful information to this website.

Sorry if I offended anyone... in a better mood.

Seriously? You think it's a "fairly large discrepancy" that his profile says CA but he's in ID?

    Seriously?

Odd. MTC seems to have decent looking equipment. Wouldn't properly call them a mega carrier though. Middling to large, sure.

I think the "old hands" lack reading comprehension skills. None of the crap brought up by the old hands has anything to do with the original post.
