That's exactly what those ARI 140" sleeper trucks are. Why do you think people haul for moving companies? It pays the basic bills (usually the truck payment) and ensures they get to travel in style for their retirement and enjoy life. All while getting discounted group medical insurance before or while Medicare sets in.
If someone can do both... work and enjoy it... don't #### on em.

And anyone who honestly believes the rates are going to get any better for any reason, is just blowing smoke up their own ###. Freight is cheap. Gotta figure out how to make hauling it cheaper. That's where the research needs to be. -
I'm not pissing on anyone for anything. Just pointing out the truth. Most people with the 140" sleepers are not retirees. They are in a very specialized segment hauling some really high dollar freight giving a level of service most drivers wouldn't understand. Good point. Most of those big sleepers can't get into a lot of shippers/receivers. And most of that high dollar stuff is forced dispatch too I believe. Not necessarily a wise choice for someone who wants to take it easy.

After a little more thought, maybe the wisest choice would be to just lease to Swift. $1/mile +FSC will certainly cover your expenses with no tractor payment. You can run when and how you want. You won't get rich and you won't go broke either. They seem to have plenty of freight in and out of California. They run vans, flats, intermodal and reefer. You only need a tractor (of any age) that will pass a level 1 and a copy of your 2290. And on top of that, you wouldn't have to worry about all the haters on TTR. Nobody here would mind. Although I don't think you are particularly concerned with others opinions. Either way, if the the tractor is paid for, the megas might not be such a bad option. You're obviously savvy enough to skip the lease purchase thing. It would be interesting to read a thread about someone leased to a mega with no tractor payment and find out if it's really that bad.

Forced dispatch is a hand holding company paying prevailing low rates. There are companies like Forward Air who pay the cheap $1 a mile plus surcharge and you see some of those big sleeper trucks there every now and then. How they make any money hauling so cheap in a $250,000+ tractor Lord only knows? The guys making money with big sleeper trucks are not having their hand held at some forced dispatch company like that. The guy wants to take it easy and wants to make money too... Lol......

I was thinking more along the line of the high dollar stuff like aircraft parts and what not. Not forced dispatch in the hand holding sense as much as the we need you to run for us now not when it's convenient and you feel like it. If that makes any sense

Yeah you're right. That would be customer needs dictating when that truck moves out. That person might get a call at 2am "hey we need your truck here to pick up this 747 engine right now" of course they are getting paid far and above what normal freight would pay.
For some reason OP's post strikes me as one of these dreamers who wants to drive easy trips on interstate then maybe park the truck at the public beach access on the weekend and lay in a hammock sipping adult beverages. It would seem profit isn't necessarily a goal of the OP. I am thinking it's more about doing some trucking for fun without going broke. I would gather that probably 90%+ of the members of TTR are trucking to make a living. Maybe that's why it seems so bizarre. A guy who doesn't have to go trucking for survival but instead wants to for entertainment and or extra cash. #Anomaly
