When to Sign a Log Sheet?

    This is something I've seen disputed everywhere without any definitive answer.

    When is a log sheet supposed to be signed? Also, can a driver be nailed with a falsification violation if the log sheet is unsigned?

    It should be the very last thing that you do. You putting your signature on the log certifies that all of your entries are correct and legal.

    (7) Signature/certification. The driver shall certify to the correctness of all entries by signing the form containing the driver's duty status record with his/her legal name or name of record. The driver's signature certifies that all entries required by this section made by the driver are true and correct.

    You'd get hit with a form and manner violation, not a falsification should an officer stop you.

    Why would you get hit with a violation if everything you've logged so far is true and correct with no edits or modifications needed?

    You do not sign until you go off duty or into sleeper for your time off. Or end of day usually.

    I always had the minimum last 13 days logs, which have to be turned in. And every page (Day) except today's working day was signed.

    Remember you sign a log, you are essentially legally swearing to the truth of those logs you made.

    By not signing today's uncompleted log you allow room for a small law that says drivers are afforded a oppertunity to correct any issues detected the last 70 hours at inspection.

    The more I remember this the more I think of other things. If I had three logbooks, two of which is completely unsigned, it's the same as either toilet paper or a source of evidence of violations which then a stack of tickets are written along with a giant OOS pasted to your window where your eyes go out over the steering wheel.

    Just run the one log, wait to end of day and sign it. Make sure your toll ticket times match along with stamped and signed bills of lading, fuel tickets and border crossings to and from Canada or Mexico.

    Question 28: May a driver use a computer, tablet, or smartphone (that is not an Automatic On-Board Recording Device) to create, electronically sign, and store the record of duty status (RODS)?

    Guidance: Yes. A driver may make manual duty-status entries to a computer, tablet, or smartphone program that is used to generate the graph grid and entries for the record of duty status (RODS) or log book, provided the electronically-generated display (if any) and output includes the minimum information required by § 395.8 and is formatted in accordance with that section. The driver must sign the RODS (manually or electronically) at the end of each 24-hour period to certify that all required entries are true and correct.

    1. If electronic signatures are not used:
      • The driver must print and manually sign the RODS daily.
      • The driver must have in his or her possession the printed and signed RODS for the prior seven consecutive days (if required on those days).
      • The driver should be given an opportunity to print and manually sign the current day’s RODS at the time of the inspection.
    2. If RODS have been electronically signed:
      • At the time of an inspection of records by an enforcement official, the driver may display the current and prior seven days RODS to the official on the device’s screen.
      • If the enforcement official requests printed copies of the RODS, the driver must be given an opportunity to print the current and prior seven days RODS (if required on those days) at the time of inspection.

    You sign at end of day although I have signed at beginning and dot never said anything to me.was pulled into Wisconsin scale house cause of my companies score relating to log book violations and they were trying to get me on something my log was already signed for that day and never said nothing,if they only knew that all my non matching receipts were in my pocket lol and trust me he was on the computer running my miles and time I put.Just playing the game.

    End of day. Countlessly DOT'd, no log violations. If you sign before you finished your day, you have falsified your log. Your swearing something is true and correct, before you've written anything down, it's illogical. You can find in FMCSR.

    I've always signed my logs at the end of my shift.Doesn't make since signing at the start of your shift when you have the post trip to do.
