And what would you do if the driver damaged the truck (not enough to claim insurance but you know)... the way some company drivers do... cracked bumper... scratch marks... and then they say it was debris.

As an o/o would you have to suck it up? Would you fire the driver?

I have hired several and I vet them as well as I can, including a road-test. I expect there will be some damage/accidents over time--especially as we spent a lot of time off-highway doing oilfield/heavy haul--because nobody is perfect.

I expect them to be honest about what happened and if they lie to me then they are gone. Regardless of whether any incident was preventable or not, it is a cost of business to me.

The decision to keep a driver depends on many factors. I have let a driver go after one minor incident and I have had another one I kept on despite several major ones.

    Thanks!

So I have been looking into buying a truck (from a dealer) and leasing to the company I drive for (as an owner) and hire a driver. I've researched how to pay my driver as an employee and would like to know where I can find a sample employee/work agreement? How should I pay him for highway work? By the mile or a flat rate per day since the run is usually around 700 to 710 miles per day.

I don't think it's all the same... I have yet to meet a driver who's being paid $32 per hour. I've heard of lease operators (who do city work) making $36 per hour.
