Once you cross state lines you are operating as an Interstate carrier, private or not they got you there....

As far as the other, a private carrier hauling its own products or products to manufacture its own products is not operating as a "for-hire" carrier, thus no MC#

For example, Efficient Burner Inc manufactures heating equipment in MI and only backhauls to their plant on their own trucks the components necessary to build their burners from the component manufacturers in OH and IN......Efficient then hauls its completed burners on its own trucks to customers in PA, NY & NJ...No operating authority is needed, but they must obtain a USDOT and file as an Interstate carrier....

Now, if they ONLY hauled their own products or components in MI, they could register as an Intrastate carrier...You see, once you cross State lines much more applies, good luck.....

As I under stand it, If you truck is used for business and is over 10,000 u you need a us dot number, driver needs med card but not Cdl ( 26,001 or more) ,if all that you haul is yours , same as name on truck reg. Such as abc co. owns truck and the load that it's hauling then you are a private carrier and don't need authority interstate or intrastate.
