Not really that rare of a beast. Lots of us out here are 'part time/semi retired'. And we do it at profitable levels.

It's not as difficult as you'd think. Combination of limiting expenses, and working hard pullinh good paying freight when market conditions are right. When freight is paying good and i can clear 500 a day i keep working till it dries up and go home for a couple weeks or a full month.

I have considered making the leap over and over again. Every time I get close to pulling the trigger I realize I am doing well enough year round. Playing the markets is wise but seems too risky for me. I always wind up towing a guy that is on his last dollar. The ever present reality check you know?

There's a couple of companies that specialize in hauling aircraft parts and use owner-operators. Can't remember the names right now; seems like one is headquartered in NC.

You put it darn close to home on that one. I still need to make a living. But not like most guys. It's just the two of us. I'm the only licensed one. We have minimal bills and basically need to make the money to just live. No truck or house payment. No car payments. Just a way to still be a trucker as a living, minus the headache and heartache. We can choose to both go out, or only I go out. I get tired in 2-3 weeks, I go home. We feel like staying out 3 months, we stay out.

Profit is important in the sense of receiving the proper and maximum return for what we put into it. I won't run cheap just to run. But I also know that if I want to take my time and spend 7 days going from CA to FL that I will expect to be paid relative to the load, not the time. If I want big money I know to run CA to FL in 4 days and turn and burn.

I mean, seriously, who wouldn't love to cruise the country in a 140" ARI and make enough to just enjoy life? But darnit if you can figure out how to park those darn things in most truckstops.
