I am a newbie driver. I am starting on my 4th month out of school and then training through a small company. I am teaming with my husband.
My reasons for starting were love, adventure and income.
Love--to be with my man (we have been married a long time and enjoy each other's company).
Reality--I still enjoy his company, but it can be very difficult to be in a tiny space with someone all the time. The adjustment has been rough. It has helped our relationship in that we have to talk to each other now. There is no letting things being forgotten for another day.
Adventure-- I have always had a yearning for travel, to go to places I have not been to.
Reality -- you only pretty much see the highways and docks, not always(there are a few other roads you can take and some I haven't found yet, but be careful and check your truckers atlas). Also you go to a lot of the same places (which does have its advantages).
It is better than staying home all the time, and I really appreciate coming home.
Money -- I won't say how much I make, but it is not bad. More then either of us made at our previous jobs. We are averaging 4 to 6 thousand miles a week, and we get paid for team miles (more than average from what I have read here).
I will say that it is probably the hardest job I have ever had. I is a way of life. It is tiring, stressful, terrifying and humiliating. It is also amazing, fun, exciting and bazaar.Grijon and jlawson1979 Thank this. -
HeartlandNewbie,
, we got fun and games, welcome to the jungle, we take it day by day. You would be surprised to know just how many people don't do their research, then end up hating it.heartlandnewbie1988 Thanks this. -

.26 cpm for average starter? .84cpm for average O/O? Are you a driver?
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Yes I am, why? did I not take realistic numbers? I took averages. To come up with an exact number would have taken more time than I had available.
I took the mega's and went middle of the road as for company driver wages and I took Trans Am's lease driver mileage rate because I figured that most new people who drive for Trans Am, get sucked in to their Lease program, because it sounds attractive. -
Wrong. Most flip flop wearing, sweat pants toting wannabe steering wheel holders do. Mostly the yuppies and collage kids who've been displaced. Some of the most disgusting creatures I've ever seen.
Truckers, REAL truckers are some the best folks I've ever met hands down. Period!
Don't judge real truckers by the plethora of CRAP being thrown behind the wheel in massive numbers these days. Just because someone "drives" a truck, doesn't make them a TRUCKER.TripleSix, redoctober83 and heartlandnewbie1988 Thank this. -
I dont wanna be like that. I mean sure, ill wear flip flops to go in to grab a bite to eat or if im not doing anything that day but driving but if im at a shipper/reciever,im going to be in steel toe boots. I wanna be a respectable member of the industry, not another steering wheel holding chump.chralb Thanks this.
