A couple of ways. By the hour, % of the load or by the mile (otr, regional.) Love's or pilot pay weekly and they say 1k. With 5 days on 2 off or 4 on and 3 off. Usually working 12hrs on and 12hrs off.
Don't know anything about the food grade side. But I would imagine they are otr or regional (don't require hazmat endorsement, just tanker)

Ford Convert is right on the leasing your truck to TMC. I would say if you are going to give it shot which is a horrible idea then buy an older truck with a S60 Detroit with around 700k miles. Should be able to get it for 15-20k. Then start a huge savings account like .20cpm. Remember even before you count a truck payment youre talking .60cpm to drive it down the road once you ad in expenses.
fordconvert Thanks this. -
Did he get the truck through tmc or buy used his first truck?
-
Thanks, but not worth it. He makes that now. He'd only leave for more money and more home time.
-
Their trucks are definitely sitting with some miles on them, but again i know for a fact that many of the ones that are being bought by tmc drivers and then leased back on with tmc, they are doing full on cat rebuilds that come with warranties in the work. So just a thought

They're still $40-50k though. Seems way overpriced.

First off your fuel figures are way high get a Nastac card and save a ton. Second I think a guy can make a living right there pulling intermodal out of Jacksonville. You could start with a day cab or rental. Be careful with old used up rigs unless he is very handy. I'm not new every 3 period. I wish you guys luck you don't live in the best place.
Be Safe Out There

Im not trying to be a naysayer but I have to agree with AK, trying to buy a truck to get more time at home is a dangerous proposition. It might be a better idea to find a local job there in Florida until you can get more money saved up. You could get in trouble quickly if you buy a used truck and the engine or tranny goes out in it. Even the injectors going out wouldnt be cheap.
You not only would lose the money for the repair, but youd also lose your income until it got repaired unless you were in the position to lease another one while yours was down and thats not cheap either.
Good Luck.Last edited: Jul 7, 2016

He
Bought his own 700,000 mile w900/cat first, then bought an FLD120 S60 for his second truck. The FLD was his most profitable truck. It got wrecked by an oncoming truck wheel in Arkansas.
Another w900, then a 2011 KW 680 (?) with an isx cummins. He has had lots of trouble with this one. He has been considering one more new kw before he retires
