What are the odds that a trucking company will let me install my own CD Player in place of the stock AM/FM Radio they are equipped with?

I'd like to be able to throw my own in that can play CD's, is Sirius Ready, and that I can plug my laptop into to play music directly from that through the truck speakers (it would work great if I got laptop trucking GPS software as well). I'm trying to avoid FM Transmitters. Most of them are garbage, let alone the fact that using an FM transmitter for long distance driving is just impractical. I'm sure I'd be constantly bombarded by signals from other locations (radio stations as I pass through different areas and whatnot).

Anyways, sorry for the technical mumbo jumbo. What do you think? Swapping it out seems easy enough. I've done it before in multiple vehicles without a problem.

I asked first at the last company I drove for. They had no problem as long as I did not damage the dash. When I left, I installed the old radio and went my own way.

What company was that? The process isn't really that big of a deal. Most of the stock radios have the 4 holes for the U-Shaped tools to easily pop them out and unplug the wiring harness. Then just throw in an aftermarket deck with a new wiring harness and your set. I figured as long as I throw the stock back in when they trade in the truck then it shouldn't be a problem. We shall see.

I wonder if all trucks are going to end up having APU's on them eventually. I'd love to be able to idle wherever I'm at and have all sorts of crap plugged in (tv, receiver, game console, fridge, microwave, computer, etc) without having to deal with inverters and energy consumption when the truck isn't running.

Speaking of which, how do people deal with the anti-idling laws anyway? When it's 100 degrees outside in Cali and people are asleep in their trucks during the day, how do they keep from roasting to death?

    They don't exist anymore.

They couldn't do payroll right, and liked to have you run illegal.

We parted ways and I heard they went belly up about a month after I left.

    Maybe so.

But I remember reading today that GuysLady had posted about some recent tickets issued in California. You might want to look into this.

This months issue of Landline has a list of states and what their laws and penalties are for idling. I was surprised to find that some states find this "offense" punishable by a jail term!

You think manufacturer's will just start putting apu's on the trucks sometime soon? I like the idea just for the increase in comfort.. a/c or heat whenever you want plus high wattage inverter for microwaves and lots of electronics :biggrin_25525:

If the lawmakers are going to be so serious and put drivers in jail for idling they should in fact start making it mandatory for manufacturers to put the APU'S on the trucks so the driver doesn't have to idle the truck.
