I'm glad I've taken the steps to drive OTR no doubt and it's worked out quite well for the most part. Even leasing a truck I haven't lost my ###. Financially I'm doing well.
Where I'm having trouble is that now that my more immediate goals have been accomplished I am seeing my long term goals don't align with the original plan of getting an authority.
Crisscrossing around the country is one thing and truthfully, just like anything else the novelty does wear off. Leasing a truck is another. As I see the responses in this thread and from other sources operating a truck, trailer, authority, and dealing with the paperwork is the major leagues. And playing in the major leagues requires a great deal of time. Time I have other plans for.
My hats off to the folks who truly operate their own trucking business, because it can be rough running OTR. I've been at it for a year straight with fifteen days of total home time. I saw more home time while I was deployed over seas for eighteen months. I got thirty days then.
I know not all authority holders operate OTR, but still running your own show can be risky and rough. Good luck to all you who do run your own show, I wish you the best.
Thanks everyone for being insightful and taking the time to offer your perspective. I've made my decision and have already started taking steps to move forward.rollin coal Thanks this. -
As long as you go in eyes wide open and don't have unrealistic expectations that's awesome. Go for it. Some people take constructive criticism as a personal affront instead of taking it for what it really is - something meant to help. That kind of attitude (taking constructive criticism the wrong way) is akin to shooting yourself in the foot before starting something.
Looking ahead, keep in mind too that pretty much anywhere east of the Mississippi River, if you want to be running an operation where you can get some decent quality home time, you can. You just have to put some effort into figuring out how.
Now out west, I dunno. But there seem to be plenty of operators out in CA who have figured out the same thing staying in western states. It's a goal to shoot for. You may sacrifice now to get yourself ahead of the game financially but you don't want to be one of these drivers that spends a lifetime out here banking 1 day off for every 10 you work and hoping you get home every couple of months.
There's really no excuse for companies treating drivers like that in this day and age. That's a relic from the past that mostly lives on at mega companies. Mid sized and small companies don't do that. Heck I know of fleets with a few thousand trucks that get drivers home weekly.DeGuzzie Thanks this. -
Now just to get ^ someone fired up. What you should do is lease on with a company called F2F or something like that.

Well after all that went down and is out there in the public domain if he takes that chance, good luck, lol.
