To add to this question, what is the best rpm for a Mercedes engine with approx 375 HP. I think 50 HP got left back east when they delivered it here in BC. I seem to see better economy at about 1700 rpm but that seems high, no?

One of the worst engines I've ever driven.. If I remember right they had to be higher in the rpm range to even feel like they had any power. Only company I ever drove one at was doing car hauling and in the mountains they were such slugs.

I had a 2006 MBE4000 at 450 hp. Originally it had 3.58 rears which were way to tall for that engine, but it was spec'd for US loads. I changed them to 4.11 so it did 1,500 rpm at 100 kph. It worked way better then. Before the change it got 6.8 pulling vans, after it got 7.5.

Ha. Definitely hear you on that. How was the Jake? Pretty sure mines an exhaust brake. Holding a pale out the window would be more effective.

Any engine that has to be wound out to have anything usesable on them is ####.

I love engines that you can lug down to 1000 and it wont quit... much maybe fixing to buck on you if you try to lug it to 900. Ive only see once that happened and that was with a super 500 mack while I was skipping split axles on the international behind him at 1350.

By the same token you could take some engines to 3000, but mind the bearings at the crankshaft on those (Mack 350's) when you turn em over that high.

I have a 2010 670 with a D13 and an I Shift. 900,000 km on the clock. My truck. I haul light. Very light. I only run 400 miles a night. I pull A trains now. Lots of turbulence between tractor and lead and between trailers. I'm usually flat but have some small but steep hills.

I switch the tranny from auto to manual on the hills and keep my rpms and boost low. I also run at 98 km/hr.

My air filter is good. My fuel filters are good, and my DPF filter and system were just cleaned. I'm running at 7.5 MPG .... could be better but I'm also running on new Michelin XDS2 drives. Big winter boots in summer.

About the only other thing I can think of the effects my fuel economy/aerodynamics is that I keep my head out the window screaming at moose and black bears to get the #### off my highway. When there are no animals to yell at, I sing Eagles songs at the top of my lungs .......

So far .... between accountants and therapists ..... all is well with fuel economy and mental health .....

    just sayin ....
