Can anyone tell me how freight is going out of SC on short runs? I'm in Columbia which doesn't seem like a busy place but I've heard Greenville and the SC port towns are pretty steady.

I am low on the seniority list at my other job and have quite a few hours I could run each week if it were worthwhile. I would like to find a triangle or lane that is easy toefind loads in and get 800-1200 miles a week. I won't run for free and would be buying something decent in the $45k range and would put quite a bit down so payments would be reasonable. I would also be willing to purchase a trailer if I needed to... van, flatbed or end dump.

I'm also doing research on a dump truck or end dump to run locally. With a dump I could get my brother in law to run some hours of I could get the work. Dumps are crazy expensive around here so the cost to get into it would be a lot higher unless I got something old. I've been trying to check out load boards but they want a DOT number and right now I'm researching the potential of this.

I did own a successful small business which I sold before moving to SC so I know how to run numbers and absolutely will not drive for free...I'm fortunate to have done well with my other business and my other trucking job pays well even if I only get 30 hours per week.

    Thanks for any info.

I pull out of Bridgestone in Graniteville almost any time I'm in down in that area. But I'm pulling back to Canada.

I'd make sure you can pick up some secondary work. I know its grounds for termination at my company.

I was told it was OK if the work wasn't similar. I need to get clarification on that from a higher up.

Maybe a dump truck would be safest. Hauling asphalt isn't anything like pulling doubles.
