What are the best ways to ensure you don't get in accidents

And how is it that a Map from Rand McNally is 100% accurate but their GPS is not?

Map Data is used in many ways.

 

All the yrs I drove truck I have never had any issues with the Atlas but the GPS I have with it trying to send me where I'm not suppose to be.My point is to not solely depend on GPS use your brain and common since which sadly and unfortunately many drivers in today's trucking do not then they end up in a bad situation not paying attention to their surroundings and just keep driving.Drivers need to think for themselves the GPS won't do it for them.

We can certainly agree on that point.
The best tool we have is between our ears.

I'll let you know when I hang up my keys and retire. In the meantime I drive with absolute paranoia of the public and the cops.

 

I'll give you an example, I was heading to somewhere in VA.

My RandMcNally GPS wanted me to take 220 N to 77N to get there.

I was tired of running the mountains up 77 and decided to take 29N to 64E and cut out a lot of 77.

Well, as soon as I got on 29N, the GPS started telling me to do a u-turn- in a semi... on a highway.

Then, it started recalculating the route for an hour trying to get me to turn around on and go back to catch 220. And it kept taking time on my miles to go and ETA. I mean it had me up to 600 miles away!

Then poof! It finally found the route I was taking and I actually arrived 30 minutes earlier than if I would've blindly followed its routing.

So, yeah. It's good to use an atlas in conjunction with your gps, along with whatever other tools you have- google earth.

 

Back to common sense... Review the route and adjust as needed or to your personal preferences. One can do that without an Atlas.

Again, I'm not Anti Atlas but I tend to "delegate navigation" to the tech and review and approve as needed.

 

I even went so far as to change the voice on my Rand McNally GPS from the woman's voice to the man's voice. He's just as stupid as she was.
