I have been driving a desk for Honeywell for the past 30 years and investigating second career possibilities that are a bit different. In early 07 I rented a truck to take my skills test and obtained my class A CDL with hazmat. My goal was to experience diving over the road without quitting the day job. In March, with 5 week’s vacation in hand, I hired on with FedEx Custom Critical as a contractor driving solo over the road in one of their 24ft straight trucks equipped with sleeper. Most of the pickups were late day with ASAP, in the dark, delivery times. It was new, exciting, and way out-of-the-box experience that I truly enjoyed.

I am 52, still at the day job and I only have a couple questions for now. If I were to go to truck driving school and get my training, what flatbed company would you recommend I start with for my first year?
    Thanks,
    The Stump Guy

Going to your local DMV, passing the written and driving skills doesn’t help you much in landing an over the road tractor trailer job. The industry will not hire you with out proper schooling. Can’t say that I blame them, can you? Can you imagine the unschooled unsafe lethal weapons that would be on our highways? Best to find yourself a good school.

    InMyDreams Thanks this.
