It is a dirty job though. Those hourly rates are what guys are making in my area of Canada. I went to school to be a mechanic. Get enough experience and you can move up to a field guy and maybe run a nice single axle Pete/KW service truck.

It's not a waste of time at all. I wanted to get peoples's opinions on this career, good and bad, and that's what I'm getting from you guys. Plus, I'm sure others in my situation will peruse this thread and appreciate the input from you guys.
MackDiamondTKWnut Thanks this. -
All depends on the Journeyman rate. 1st year apprentice usually gets 60% of Journeyman rate and progresses up from there.

If you think you would like welding I say go for it.If drivers made big bucks in trucking then there wouldn't be such a high turnover rate which is at 100%.But it also matters what kind of hauling also.General freight means average to below average wages.Liguid trucking makes more and so does oversize loads.wittyusernamegoeshere Thanks this.

I think the social aspect is what would get to me the most. Well, that and the Prius drivers with the "coexist" bumper sticker yapping on the phone while cutting you off. I'm not sure how I would handle being isolated for so long. Sirius satellite radio can only occupy your mind for so long.

We're newlyweds, so we haven't gotten to that stage yet haha

Yeah, it takes a special woman to put up with our lifestyle.
I finally found one and been with her 18yrs. But won't scare anyone by admitting how long it took, or how some better halfs turned into worse halfs. And some couples live well on the road, living in a tiny box. But must also take that special couple. I tried more than once, since it did sound fun. And first weeks always when great..... after that,
not so much. But that was just my experience. Others get along great. Just remember, they gonna need (stop) to pee a lot. Think thats what did me in on it. But remember there are also tons of good local runs to be had. Then you get to sleep in your bed at home more often. And if it were not for the local guys, us otr guys would be cussing more than when already do about some of the places we go.wittyusernamegoeshere and pattyj Thank this. -
I don't think I would mind the work, but the isolation might get to me. Actually, I do have some managerial experience. I was the manager at my last office, so that might be a good fit. Thanks for the input

I used to work in a company shop with a diesel mechanic and at 28 years old his knees were killing him from kneeling on concrete and lifting heavy parts into placewittyusernamegoeshere Thanks this.
