Hi! I am new here and just put app in with driver's solutions and received booklet of information for all of their companies. I am thinking about going with decker but i am afraid to start too late in the year because if i get hired i don't want to face the winter with little or no experience.
The other thing is i've been employed with a company now for 15.5 years and the pay is good but business is not. Working only 4 days a week and bills are piling up! I have so many questions but don't know where to start. I am excited about starting a new career but apprehensive too because i don't want to walk away from a job to end up with nothing!
Also are there any policies regarding appearance? Right now i have long hair down below my shoulders and don't know if i should get it cut if i decide to go for trucking. I am a musician hence the hair but i've had it short before but don't want to cut it unless necessary. My only other concern is dot physical because of my vision. my 1 eye was bad but now i got a contact lens and can see perfect, but i don't know what my vision is in that eye. my other eye is 20/20 and my total vision is 20/30 or 20/25.
Everything else i have no worries. don't drink, smoke or do drugs! never have never will! Thanks and sorry for long winded post.

I know what you mean about the excitement of this as a new career. I couldn't sleep for weeks before coming up here to school. I researched for weeks before signing up with Driver's Solutions and weeks after and am still researching. This site is loaded with good info. All the questions you have in mind have probably been answered, just gotta find them. Browse and search all you can. I know Averitt has image guidelines. I think long hair would be acceptable but you should ask the company to be sure. I have a beard so as soon as I saw the guidelines with them I knew it wasn't for me. As far as vision goes, we were told 20/40 is minimum total by our instructors so you should be good there. They also said the next thing is considered legally blind so we got a good laugh on that one. Do all the research you can especially if you sign a contract. Good luck to ya.

I drove for PAM, and I never heard of anybody being asked to cut their hair. They would prefer everybody look as professional as possible, clean clothes in good condition, and bathed and groomed.
But, as far as hair cut and clean shaven, not that I'm aware of.

If your eyesight is passable with glasses or contacts, they will note it on your license, and you will have to always drive with them on, or in.

    Good luck.

A few months ago I did lots of reading on this board. Of the Driver Solutions companies it appeared that P.A.M. would be the least anal in terms of allowing drivers to be comfortable. I recall someone mentioning that his P.A.M. trainer had very long hair and long beard.

I live near the main terminal for USA and have noticed a few of their drivers with hair and whiskers. Didn't take long to realize that Averitt and I were not likely to see eye to eye.

Lots of very very nasty truckers out there, but don't recall any of them having hair and a beard. Long as someone knows how to use soap, water, shampoo, toothbrush and the like, nothing else should matter.

Thanks to all your replies. I hope you don't have wrong image of me or if i was misrepresenting my appearance. I shower every day as well as brush my teeth 2 or 3xs a day. I usually will wear a ponytail or put hair up under a hat. I'm basically just on of the ones from the 80's so its harder to shake the look and the music.lol! I did have short hair for awhile and came to realize it wasn't me it just took forever to get it to grow lol!! I'm not in a band as of yet but have been playing lead guitar for 23 years. I am a child of the 80's and love that eras music of all kinds except rap! i also shave every other day because i don't like having a beard at all. i was just wondering how it is out there because of my hair even though i've seen many drivers with short and long hair since i deal with them at my current warehouse job. I will say most of them are very polite and nice and if have time have plenty to talk about or answer any questions i may have which is very cool! I met one lady who was a trucker with her husband and asked her about it and she was helpful and made me laugh! she said"Honey if i can drive one of these things and do it like i do every day anyone can do it" made me smile and brightened up my day. I just know certain jobs frown on people with long hair and they won't hire them. Like i said though i don't have problem with cutting it but if i don't have to why bother. I take care of myself and always try to take pride in how i look but i know long hair can sometimes turn people off so i was concerned and didn't want to convey a wrong image, even though i don't always care what people think. The other thing i forgot to mention was last year i got my motorcycle license and because of my bad eye they gave me 2 restrictions on updated license. the restriction was i must have 2 mirrors in order to drive anything. several months ago i went for cdl permit with hazzmat and they also told me i passed vision however i may not make guidelines for hazzmat but that was before i saw an eye specialist and got a specially made lens for my bad eye. with the new lense my vision improved drastically. i know my total vision is 20/30 or 20/25. my bad eye used to be 20/70 but with lens i remember being able to read 20/50 but i don't know what toal number is for that eye but i should be o.k. i think i will call them and see if they can pull my records and let me know. I already told recruiter if i leave for their school i can't come back empty handed because i will lose my current job and he assured me that won't happen but i know not everything is the truth. lol! Thanks all and i will keep in touch!
